I met my next door, third floor neighbor last night after work. He has an antique motorcycle and he was out front with it, so when I went to get my mail I started to talk to him about it.

Over the course of the conversation, I asked him about the birds in his apartment. My landlord mentioned that there were birds next door, and as a former bird owner, I was curious.

Turns out they have just one, a red-naped amazon parrot, a grouchy old thing, and he (the neighbor, L) stays away from the bird which belongs to his live-in GF, S.

As the talk turned to pets, L told me that he and S both work in pet stores, and he mentioned something about breeding Siamese, and Maus and Rexes. I got confused, as the week we moved in (just 2 weeks ago) I saw a handsome persian sitting up in the window of the room the bird is kept in.

So I asked L about the persian, and he said, "Oh, I was breeding them, but they're too much trouble, so I'm going to breed the siamese now."

I asked him what happened to the persians, and he said, "Oh, we got rid of them."

I stopped asking questions and bit my tongue right there.

This kid is obviously not too well off, and clearly, if he is "breeding" at all, it is just to make money selling cats. It really didn't seem like he gave two hoots about the persian that had recently been living there, in fact, his lip curled into a little sneer when he said they "got rid of" the cat.

I don't even want to know. Nor do I want to speak to him again if I can avoid it. I can't respect anyone that treats their animals like that.

Ohhhhhhh no!!!! Can you get some sort of animal welfare group to check his practises and make sure he has all certifications needed, and is keeping the animals in good condition?

My assumption is that he is not licensed, and at this point I don't know his last name, just his first name. I don't hear any meowing coming from his apartment, just the bird occasionally whistling, so I can't say for certain that he even has any cats on premises at the moment.

But believe me, if there comes an opportunity and I have proof, I'll make some calls.

Definitely, I don't blame you for not wanting to be around him.

I would definitely keep an eye out for any of the animals. What happens if the Maus or Siamese become too much of a hassle??

Hopefully, he is just trying to be 'cool' and is really a nice guy... and found good loving homes for the cats that he got rid of. (I'm assuming that in his life he has 'gotten rid of' more then one cat)

I wish the best for the situation and the cats. I'm sure that if something bad happens you will make the phone calls!

There was someone standing in the middle of the street here yesterday trying to give away puppies to cars going by. I started crying on the way to work.

I don't have any advice, because I couldn't figure out what to do (the people did look like they'd take kindly to being given a talking-to) but you're not alone

I pass a BYB every day going home. They sell AKC lab puppies about 4-5 times a year...grrrrrrr. I've been tempted to stick the Petfinder information regarding the sheer number of labs looking for homes in their mailbox.
