Hello,
I am new to this forum and wanted to seek some advice. I have a 10 week old kitten I found on my back porch 3 weeks ago. She was in very bad shape with a deep open wound to her neck and her belly very swollen. I took her to the vet three times and they put her on high doses of antibiotics and clavamox. Also, she had cocidia and was treated for that. She would have a regurgitating sound too. It may have been from the cocidia but now it is all gone.
I noticed, that when she tries to meow nothing comes out. Could this be an underlying disease causing this or maybe from her injury. Other than that she seems to be a very happy, playful and veryyyy sweet kitten.
Since I am putting her up for adoption, I am hoping I don't have to bring her to the vet again. After over 250.00 in vet bills.
Any suggestions?

I'm glad to hear you're taking such good care of this kitty

Well I don't know that much about cat diseases and stuff but I thought I would just let you know that one of my cats sometimes opens her mouth and nothing comes out and my friend has a cat that also doesn't have a meow. She opens her mouth and you may hear a small squeak but most of the time it's just silent. Both of these cats are completely healthy.

Awwww poor kitty!!!! I'm so pleased you nursed her back to health, you are a wonderful person!!

There certainly are some kitties who seem to open their mouth, and no sound comes out. Maybe she was in pain before with her wounds and illness that meowing was painful, so she makes the motion now without the sound?

If your vet has given her a clean bill of health, I daresay she'll be fine. Just get her new owners to keep a close eye on her when she's adopted, and maybe get a check up in 3 months time?

It could be from the injury. I've known cats that had little or no meow. My only concern would be if she's showing signs of getting a cold or congestion--then you may want to keep her a little longer or call the vet and ask about treatment.

It may be from injury or she could be deaf... have you notice how she reacts to sound alone (ie: not banging on the floor or something that would cause vibrations too, just sound)... my aunt (who is deaf) has a deaf kitty named Princess Maple - she purrs, but she doesn't meow... she knows sign language though - especially the sign for cookie!

It could be she has allergies or some residual hoarseness from her many problems. You could take her back to the vet one more time for a steroid shot and if she had swollen glands or anything like that it would be gone.

On the deaf thing they can't tell how loud they are, but usually that means they are louder than normal. But you never know.

Good luck!

Also I'm just wondering, did they worm her? Is her belly still swollen?

Like some of the others said, sometimes cats do make a silent meow. It could be she is just doing this right now and you will hear her voice later. I have found that very shy cats take a while to find their voices.

my former cat chopin when he was a kitten for the first couple months I had him he wouldn't meow, just open his mouth and nothing came out, but eventually as he grew his meow developed (and oh did it develop) so it could be the same with your kitten, but since yours has had some injuries especially to the neck area, it's possible maybe his vocal chords were affected, but if the vet has checked them and all is ok, then most likely they kitty will be fine. I hope the little one will be ok and develop his meow

Some deaf cats will meow louder than others - usually those who once had hearing or have some residual hearing... a lot of cats who've been deaf from birth, don't even realize they are able to make sound and they've never heard another meow to know.... it's kind of the same with deaf people too

Anyway, I'd take another shot at the vet too, just to make sure there's nothing medically wrong that she's doing that
