The cat I had when I was growing up, Bootsie, lived to be 22 1/2 years old, and died of old age.
My next cat, Spooky, lived to be nearly 17 years old, died of CRF.
My sister's cat, Billy, lived to be 18 years old, died of CRF.
My parent's cat, Samson, lived to be 19 1/2 years old, died of CRF.

The cats I have now are 7, 6 and 4 1/2 years old. I sincerely hope they live as long as the other cats in our family have lived! Maggie and Cleo both have CRF, so luck probably isn't on their side, but I will fight as hard as I can to give them a long life!

My first cat only lived 7 1/2 years (she was an indoor/outdoor cat).
Her sister lived 17 years.
I also had a kitten when I was twelve, who only lived a few months.

My current cats are both ten years old, and will hopefully live many more years.

My only RB kitties were both siamese. One died at 18 the other at 22. Both of multiple organ failure.

My oldest is 14 and still healthy and active. The only kitty I've lost is my male tuxedo, Willy, who died from CRF before he was five. My others are Gracie, 8, and littermates, Peter and Claire, 3, so I hope they'll all be around for a while.

My oldest cat ,Patches, was 23 when she had to be put to sleep. She had CRF. My next oldest, Princess, was 17 and also had CRF. My sweet Marbles was not yet two when he died over a week ago. I can only pray that the remaining three (Oreo, Tosh and Snickers) can live to at least 23 like Patches.

CRF is Chronic Renal Failure. It is usually a disease that affects older kitties, like my Spooky, my sister's Billy and my parent's Samson. But my Cleo was diagnosed with CRF at the age of 6 months (she's now 7 years old) and Maggie was diagnosed a couple of months ago at 6 years old, so it really can occur at any age.

We lost Hippocrates at 13 to cancer.
We lost Max at 8 to heart failure
We lost Samantha at 12 to an infection that we could not cure (she was very feral but lived inside the house)
We lost Bogart at 13 to CRF
We lost Tigger at 9 to heart failure
We lost Shep at 17 from a stroke
We lost Emily at 5 to ARF (acute renal failure)
We lost Ruby at 4 to FeLV
We lost Morrison and Hendrix at 10 months to FeLV
We lost Boris at 18 months to FIP
I won't go down the list of our outdoor ferals, as that list would be very long.

I guess when you take in as many cats as we do, you see just about every disease. Most of our cats had bad starts in life.

I was skimming thru the current Cat Fancy magazine at Petsmart's checkout yesterday and they had an article on the oldest cats. The record breaker was 37 years, and there was one cat featured that is currently 36. All of the cats in the article were over 25.

Probably not the same article that the OP posted about, but was an interesting quick read. Sorry, didn't buy it so can't look anything up for you.

For those who've had pets 18plus years, were they on regular store bought meow mix or exclusive diet. Any UTI problems? I have never seen so many cases of poor health in this era, when in years past, cats lived so long...what gives?

For my 23 year old (Patches), she was on normal meow mix. She did have UTIs a lot and it turned into CRF but that was not until the last couple years of her life. She had to be put to sleep because of how bad her health got and she was in a lot of pain which could not be helped. I really don't know why she did so well except that it maybe was genetics??? It was 9 years ago that she died. It really is strange that here with the four cats I have had since her I have on special diet foods and much better medical care and yet I lose one at age 17 and just now lost another at not yet 2!!!! It drives me insane. I wish I knew if it was the change in how food is made or what. Back 9 years ago you sure did not hear problems of so much recalled pet food and such. Ok, I think I need to get off my soap box
