I have a new cat Isis, she is 4 years old and a pure bred Maine Coone retired breeding cat. She's been with us since June and is a lovely animal, her only problem is her litter box stinks!

I use a clumping litter which I scoop daily, I've also tried adding baking soda.

She was eating a Holistic food called Solid Gold Katz-n-Flocken which is the same food she was eating at the breeders. The breeder also suggested Royal Canin and I'm currently in the process of switching her to this food as they have a brand that is for stinky cats.
I was doing a 50-50 split with no problems, however we still have a smell problem.

I just did a search online about Royal Canin and found this:

Suit claims pet food maker Royal Canin with deadly amount of Vitamin D
http://www.cbc.ca/cp/business/070321/b032102A.html

My heart sank. My last cat Minou died in May (she was 18) of renal failure. I had her on a wet Iams (not on recall) but when I spoke to the vet about her weight (she was only 5 lbs) we put her on Medical. It was not on the recall list however, it was only one digit off the recall list. My little kitty died shortly after of renal failure. I know she was old but still I wonder if it was her food and I feel terribly responsible. I was so worried about the food recall that I was making her own food for awhile but was afraid that it was not nutritionallly balanced.

So I will put her back on the Solid Gold food until I can talk to my vet.

I'm wondering if anyone out there knows what to do about the smell in the meantime, the main floor of our house stinks.

We put in a cat door so that we can move the litter box to the basement but she is afraid to use it. I will train her in a few weeks, I just don't want to put the box down there yet as that is where our guest room is and we are having my inlaws here next week.

So I would love some suggestions on smelly litter boxes and what are you feeding your furbabies?

Thanks,

Cori

I'm not familiar with Solid gold as it is not a food we can get in Ireland to the best of my knowledge. I'm shocked to read about Royal Canin as I use their dry kitten food; thanks very much for bringing it to attention.

Aside from changing food, what about changing litter brands? Some tend to be better than others for covering smells. Is your cat covering up properly after going? I use World's Best and, while it stinks if you're there when the cat goes, once it's covered the smell goes reasonably quickly. While it is a pain for litter tracking, it clumps really well and is very easy to scoop out.

I can't really give you much more advice unfortunately. Harry does some eye-watering poos and I'm just glad when I'm not there for them!!

NONE of the foods listed really will help with litter box odur...

Solid gold is a VERy goold food but quite grainy as is MUCH of the Natura site...

Royal canin is good but many are grainy ...

COMMON litter box issue causers

FISH

corn

wheat / barley/ rye

Potato

I would actually suggest a simple chn and rice food

Natural choice
California natural
Natures Prarie ( has a grain free)

My Zoey eats natural choice and orijen mixed .. thou adding the grain free did increase the odur

One thing that might help is giving probiotics (good bacteria) to help her digest her food better. Better digestion = less smell.

You can get a human probiotic supplement from a health food store, or one for cats from a pet store. Bene-Bac is a good one that's easy to use, and you can find it at Petsmart or Petco.

Probiotics - that's an easy one that I'll try, I'm taking them myself, so I guess I could just sprinkle a tablet into her food? She's a nibbler and I just fill her bowl every few days so I'm not sure how much to give her. Any suggestions?

Thanks so much for all your responses.

Charlie's breeder keeps up with these things. If there was a problem with RC, first CFA would be aware of it and pass it along to breeders. She has not said there was a problem feeding RC. We both are using it with no problems.
