Ezra is my daughter's cat. He is 13, has a bad eye, had bad liver values and is here with me. My daughter and family sold their apt, but the house they were buying fell through. They are living with various people and couldn't take Ezra with them.

After a vet trip, it was decided that Ezra was not going to get better. I've been syringe feeding him several times a day. He sits in the window, watches birds and butterflies, purrs when you look at him and doesn't mind the feedings at all. When we're done, he hops back on the chair near the window to watch the back yard.

I don''t know what to do. He is all bones and fur, doesn't seem to be in pain and doesn't seem to want to go to the bridge. Does anyone have advice for us? He is the sweetest cat. When I pick him up, he puts is front paws on my shoulder, purrs in my ear and gives headbutts to my cheek.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Oh, what a sweetheart... and no, this sounds like a cat who still finds joy in life. He clearly loves you! Can you just keep him?

As long as Ezra is not in pain and is clearly so in love with you, can you keep him? You are an angel to Ezra...

I agree... it sounds like he's still enjoying life. You said it yourself... "he doesn't seem to want to go to the bridge." He'll let you know when he's ready. If you can bear to continue feeding and loving him until he's ready... he'll let you know when it's time.

Since its your daughter's cat, shouldn't she decide what to do at this point? Does she know how bad he is? Did she more/less say for you to take over and make the decision?

I can relate - I had to make the decision for Mitten (he was diagnosed with cancer(s) at age 13 and went from 14 lbs to 6 or 7 lbs when I put him to sleep). The vet told me "I can give you medicine to help the symptoms but you may come home in a month or 6 months and find him dead". I didn't want him to suffer any more or cage him cause he could not make it to the litter pan in time. So had to make that final decision.

I will continue to love and care for Ezra as long as he wants to be here. I just hope I know when he's had enough. He won't eat by himself. My daughter is leaving it up to me, as I'm the one caring for him. He's down to a little over 7 pounds.

Ezra is lucky to have your love... some cats don't even get that much. I know he's not eating on his own but he seems to still be getting around on his own. I'm sure you'll know when the time is right.

Is he slowly losing weight? If he is just slowly wasting away but is still comfy, and it sounds like he is, maybe he will just peacefully pass one day. That's the way I would want to go...
