i have heard a tiger, lion, etc will not hurt a domestic cat if they are standing side by side. Is this an urban myth? I am aware my question is somewhat vague.

Uhm, I think the only way to know is to witness it, and I for one don't have access to any wild, big cats.

Probably a myth. I could be wrong, but I think I've read that any cats that people try to hybridize have to be raised together with that species so that they'll recognize each other and not fight. So it stands to reason that they'd have to learn too that the smaller cat wasn't a snack.

I agree it they were raised together, but if two adults met, the domestic kitty would be lunch or dinner !

Don't know about big wild cats, but Koko, the gorilla that communicates through sign language, has a few kitties as pets! She always communicated to her trainer that she wanted a baby and unfortunately, efforts to mate her had been unsuccessful to that point, so her trainer tried getting her a kitten that had been abandoned - Koko took her right in!

This link is a pic of Koko with her second kitty, Smoky (the first All Ball unfortunately passed, after which Koko became quite depressed - sorry, I've seen several documentaries on Koko, hehe)

And a short bit about All Ball

I know it's a little off the topic, but quite interesting

I read about Koko and her kitties in the Chicken Soup book (so sad when All Ball died), but this is the first time I've seen pics. Thanks!

You're welcome!
Koko's story is facsinating - you can download the book about her through that first website (I think there's a fee, not sure)
