I have two cats, Neko is a great boy he scratches both carpet and cardboard posts, cardboard being his favorite, he likes catnip on them. Willie on the other hand scratches couches and will not TOUCH a scratching post of rope, cardboard or carpet. He pretty much just likes couches. I don't care about the couches but my mom does and my dad does because my mom does. Catnip has no affect on Willie. Now I thought he would scratch the carpet one because he wouldn't scratch rope or cardboard one so I was begging to get it and said he'd scratch it and problems solved. Well he didn't and now my mom is mad at me for making them get it ($13 which I offered to buy, dad said he'd buy it). Is there any other types of scratching post I can make or try?

Try getting some feliway spray and spraying it on the areas of the couch that he scratches... I did this on my parents' recliner because Oliver used to scratch the corner of it - it's worked so far.... also, one material that Oliver likes to scratch is denim... I have two scratching boards I made: I cut rectangles of cardboard (idk, like a foot by 5 inches or something), probably 5 of them and stacked them on top of each other and duct taped them together (so the board's probably a 1/2 inch thick or so), then I cut up a pair of old jeans that had ripped and covered the cardboard in them - used hot glue to attach... Oliver loves these and it got him to stop scratching on my legs when I'm wearing jeans or a jean skirt.... umm, you can also try double stick tape on the couch where he scratches, if that's ok with your parents... I know your other cat uses the scratchers, but have you scratched at them to show this kitty? That's what I did with Oliver and I also put some treats and dry kibble around the posts so they were seen as a positive thing - also, before I had bought Feliway, Oliver would scratch the molding around my closet door, so I just put his scratching post in front of the spot he was scratching and he used that instead... that's all I can think of right now - good luck

How big is the scratching post you have? Most cats won't use a small one - you need one a minimum of 4 feet high - usually the more fancy treehouses they will use a lot more often.

And be sure you keep your cat's nails trimmed short. Mine tend to claw more when they get longer

I think I will try cutting up my jeans and see if he likes that. We have a cat tree but my parents won't allow it to be in the living room, the scratching post I got is about 2 feet high. Willie probably wants a horizontal scratcher anyways since he uses the couch (he gets on top of the arms or on the back of the chair) to scratch, that's why I can't use the double sided tape, it would be on the top of the arms of the chairs. Unfortunately they don't make many horizontal scratching posts.
