Has anyone heard about Mars being viewed as big as the moon later this month?

I got an email about this about a month ago, and I deleted it because I thought it really couldn't happen. But so many people are talking about it. According to what I can remember, the end of this month Mars should be close enough that it should appear as big as the moon. I find that hard to believe. It's not supposed to happen for another 2000 years, give or take.

Does anyone know if it is true? I haven't heard anything on the news about it but with everything else going on it could have fallen to the wayside until the time comes closer.

I'm terrible with searches and what not. Does anyone have any info on this?

Thanks in advance.

My Mom sent me that in an e-mail too. I get Sky & Telescope magazine and it didn't feature that so I just kind of brushed that e-mail off. I figured if somethin like that was going to happen, it would be featured front and center in that magazine. I even checked their website and it said nothing.

Imagine if it were to happen....I can just see people's reactions. "Ahhhh! It's the end of the world!!!"

It could be a very exciting few weeks for meteor showers actually.
The Perseids are due to arrive in a few days around the time of the New Moon on August 12th to make them appear that little bit more spectacular against the dark night sky, and the Aurigids, although near the full moon, could be at their best on September 1st. Here is a list of regular meteor showers and viewing tips and this is a more complete list of astronomical events to excite you.

Clear the skies!

Cool, I love meteor showers. It sucks that mars wont appear as big as the moon though. That would be so neat.

We watched a meteor shower last october, and it was so cool! I've watched them in town (or near town) before, but our new house is in the middle of nowhere with no street lights or anything so we saw a ton! I know what I'm doing Sunday night.
