I've recently decided to look for a new job. I sent my resume to 4 companies that had jobs that seemed interesting. All of them called me back and I narrowed down only 2 to interview at. Both of those interviews went very well and both companies are trying to hire me. My strong experiences and referrences give me a lot of negotiating power. That's all nice, but here's the irritating part.

Right as I was in the middle of the interviewing process with the other 2 companies, I found a dream job. I mean a DREAM job. It had everything I was looking for in a job. It's with a very reputable firm, and I am very qualified for the position. So I applied.

It took them awhile to set up an interview, and because the actual location of where I would work is a plane ride away from me they had me "interview" at a location close to me. I was stalling the other 2 companies so I could have a shot at this job.

Well the interview was crap. The person who I "interviewed" with had no idea about the job I was applying for and had her set of questions to ask me. Nothing that was relavent to the job or my application was asked. It was like an interrogation. I couldn't ask any questions. And I felt like I was interviewing with a computer. Then they administered 2 tests. One was a simple logic test, and the other was more of a personality test. When they gave me the tests they told me to just leave after I was done. It was so awkward!

I left feeling like crap, and sure enough when I got home there was an e-mail denying my employment application. It's hard to explain but I'm actually angry about it. I'm more than qualified for the job. I'm a great worker. Every person and company I've ever worked for wants me back. I have superior references, and I have portfolios of my work and accomplishments, but none of that matters. I have no idea what I did wrong, or how I can improve.

The person who is actually hiring probably has no idea that I applied and never saw my resume. I was filtered by their HR.

Ohhh, man. I feel your frustration. My motto is that if it doesn't work out, it isn't meant to be. So, maybe something better will come along! Good luck with the job search! Lots of "get the job" vibes coming your way!

That's the only problem I see with HR...they have no idea what the job entails, but weeds out qualified applicants for reasons other than competancy on the job.

We don't have a full-fledge HR person here, we just use simple screening tools when posting jobs like "Please put X in the subject line when replying to this position". If they don't put "X" in the subject line then we just trash the applicants resume since they couldn't follow directions. It's harsh, I know, but this company is very particular about that kind of stuff.

Can you possibly call them or e-mail them and ask why you did get the job? Is the person in charge of the department listed on their web site? Perhaps you can e-mail him or her and bypass HR that way?
