Hi.

I trapped a four month old feral kitten with the intention of fixing him and returning him to the place where he was born and where someone has agreed to keep feeding him.

But I accidently left the cage open and he is gone. Leaving the cage open is normally no big deal but He got out of the house somehow. So I feel horrible because he doesn't know how to hunt or anything and doesn't know his way around.

I decided instead of getting wasted and sinking into depression over it(what I was well on my way to doing) to at least try to do something to help the sitution.

I am reading that he is likely to stay in the area. I do put food out regularly for my own little colony here but they come up to my porch at their regular feeding time(1am: I am discrete). I am thinking about putting food down near the street but people think I am causing the cat problem and also I would have no idea who is eating. I couldn't do it for very long.

I am thinking maybe if I put some strong smelling stuff like Tuna on my porch he might come back. He is accustomed to eating from food left out by people, he knows nothing else actually

I am wondering if anyone more familar with the behavior of ferals have any idea the best way to help him?

Where did you trap him, is it somewhere other than near where you live? Is his mom anywhere in the area? How long ago was it?

I ask because mom cats know their kitten's cries. Also at 4 months the kitten should have been weaned by the mom.

Can you give more info?

It is true that cats tend to stay within a particuliar area...however are you aware of anyone else who is feeding outdoor cats?? Smelly food won't work if he already has a full belly so I would quickly check around the neighborhood to see if anyone else has seen him.

Many people I know swear by warm, deboned, deskinned KFC to trap ferals. I would make sure that you have thoroughly washed out the trap because if he smells anything on the trap, that may also cause him to not go in.

Let us know your progress.

Katie
