And the canned uses pork as a major ingredient. Some cats don't handle either ingredient well. Depending on your cat's diagnosis, there are other rx foods available. If baby-cat is not doing well on the Hill's, ask the vet to prescribe an alternative.

I talked to my vet yesterday. I was told to cut-down on the wet as it maybe the reason she poops often(and she gets quite stinky, too...err...sorry for TMI). I reduced the amount of wet and increased dried. Now she's constipating...

I have 5 cats, and scoop once a day. I would say there are 5 or fewer poops per day.

I feed grain free dry, and Wellness/Avoderm/Tikicat wet...

Pork? Ewwwww, didn't know that.

I talked to vet again & am told to keep combining the previous(Eukanuba) with Hill's for few more weeks to see how she's doing but definitely cut down on the wet one. Seems she finally pooped yesterday but not today yet(yes, I am checking it once in a while).

Update on our cat Chloe who was going 5-8 times a day. I had her groomed at the vet again and her behavior is better. I changed her over to Hill's Science Diet Indoor Cat formula and I'm not letting her "graze" throughout the day. She's being fed in the morning and evening now. She's still pooping on the floor, but much less. I'll have to post in the behavior section to see if anyone has suggestions for the behavior issues. Seems like the amount of food and type has helped considerably though with the number of poops per day and the smell.

Murray poops once a day, in the evening. Like clockwork. I think even when I had him on weight-control food awhile back, he still pooped just once a day.

BTW, his current food is Purina One for urinary tract health, transitioning to Royal Canin Urinary SO, and some Friskies Dental Diet mixed in. He eats all dry food - we experimented with wet food and it didn't last long.

You really should have an abdominal x-ray done.  Our cat was doing the same thing, not grooming herself, 20lbs, peeing in litter and trying to poop but pooping in house too.  Vet did x-ray and it turns out she has Megacolon.  This is a condition where the colon becomes enlarged (happens quite a bit in overweight cats).  She didnt poop for a week.  The shelter we got her from was kind enough to take her to their vets.  She required IV fluids and an enema.  She is now confined to a bathroom in hopes that she will start to go soon with 2x daily lactulose and 1x daily laxatone.  If you notice hard poop PLEASE take your cat to the vet.  Our cat could have died.

It can be maintained with a low calorie diet (science diet w/d perscription formula) yes its got the crap in it but it also is helping her go and medications.  She doesnt appear to be in as much pain.  Without treatment (and sometimes even with) they may require surgery to remove the colon.

Mako is absolutely right.  As in humans and other species, this can be life-threatening.  When in doubt, GO TO THE VET.  I know it can be expensive and the logistics difficult with our struggle for survival life; but it can make the difference for your beloved cat, so don't delay!

Hi im new to this site and i have just adopted a Cat, simba the ragdoll cat.  He is new to me and im unformular with cat behavour.

We feed him Kangaroo mince and dry food which he doesn't touch.  He poops once every 4/5 days.  He seems happy. Also he constantly looks out my window and i feel sorry for him as i can't let him outside.  He was mistreated when we got him.  He was't shown much effection and was outside most day and night.  Am i doing him wrong by keeping him inside???????????

Hi to you and Simba!
We feed him Kangaroo mince and dry food which he doesn't touch.
What's in the kangaroo mince? Does it contain bone, organs, or any supplements?
He poops once every 4/5 days.
Hmmm, that would concern me. I think most cats normally poop about once a day, some maybe every couple days if they're on a raw diet. But every 4-5 days is a bit sparse. Are you sure he isn't pooping somewhere else? When he does poo, what is it like (ie moist or dry, large log or small pebbles, hard or soft, dark or light coloured)?
Am i doing him wrong by keeping him inside???????????
Not at all! But he may need more entertainment indoors to keep him from getting bored. Do you have any interactive toys like fishing rod or wand style feathery/furry toys to play with him? Tossing some fake mice around is hugely fun for many cats, or some prefer a laser pointer, or perhaps a Cat Dancer or Turbo Track kinda thing. You might have to experiment to find something Simba likes. Alternating different types of toys also keeps it interesting. Putting treats in a treat dispensing ball that he has to bop around to get them out might also help simulate hunting and keep him happy.

But give him some time as well. Some cats have a longer adjustment period before they're comfortable in their new home.

Good luck!

...careful, a cat pooping outside it's box maybe suggesting that pooping inside the box is painful and is associating the box with the pain. Make sure the little guy is not constipated and get him tested for renal problems.

my two cents,

mike

I had a cat that was fine behavioral wise until I had my son. Once I delivered the cat would go poo @ least once a day in my sons room in the same spot!! My experience with cats... they get very jealous with major changes.

My wife and I recently adopted 2 orange tabby females. I feed them 2 small portions of dry food per day. They use the litter box every 20 minutes all day long. I am not exaggerating because I am house bound so I see, hear and smell it. Our last cat used her box 2 or 3 times a day. This seems excessive.

Mine usually poop once a day, sometimes twice. It will depend upon what the cat is eating. If there is a lot of fiber via fillers in the food, the cat will generally poop more because they don't digest it, per se'. Same with dogs too. If the cat is eating a nutrient rich food, usually there will be less litter box waste to worry about because the cat is actually digesting and absorbing the nutrition. It's a lot more complicated that the simple post I just made but you get the idea I hope. If not, I'll elaborate.

I am so tired of cleaning out the litter box. Probably 7 times Bella & Thunder will take turns pooping !
I hate to clean it so I either put a stick up near the box or keep the spray close by.

Now that is totally Cool!  I'v been asking people who have Cat, that question a lot lately.

But no one really knows... they just assume it's several times a day... and others just don't care.  But I find it's a question every Pet owner should know!

I'v never had Cats b 4, until just recently...like just the past few years.  I'v had my first Cat 2 years now, and the other, one year.   I have also trained both Cats 2 use the toilet.  And through the months an years of observation, I'v notice they poop only once a day.  Well after quite a few months of observing this, I'v decided 2 let them go outside, but only after they have Pooped.  I really think it's CROUL 2 keep any animal insede all it's life!

Well now that my neighbor has seen my Cats, she's been complaining 2 the Landlord, that my cats have been pooping in her yard.  But there R other Cats that come around 2.  How does she know it's My Cats?  She Clams shes seen them do it.    My Landlord who has had Cats 4 years, Clams that Cats poop at lest twice, 2 several times a day!  But my gut instincts tells me somethings wrong here!  Besides my neighbor is a Bitch.    She may have seen them squat, 2 pee, but not 2 poop!

I am so clad 2 find this information.  Now I can tell this 2 others who have Cats, what shoud b.

"I never would have thought poop could b so important"!

My neighbor has complained 2 the landlord, that my Cats R pooping on her lawn.  The landlord comes 2 me, telling me I need 2 get a litter box and keep my Cats inside!  I told the landlord, I let my Cats out only after they have pooped.  The landlord gos on 2 tell Me, that she has had Cats 4 years, and that Cats poop at lest twice, 2 several times a day!  And that the neighbor has seen My Cats poop in her yard!  "But my gut instincts" is telling me "something is not right here"!

The landlord also said, The Cats or Me... evicted.

But I have never had Cats b 4...until recently...just the past few years.  I have 2 Cats!  My first Cat came 2 me 2 years ago.  The second Cat has been with me 4 a year now.  I have trained both Cats 2 poop in the Toilet.  After observing 4 several months, that they poop once a day, I have decided 2 let them out side, but only after they have pooped!   "I couldn't believe it".  I said 2 the landlord, she may have seen them squat 2 pee, but no poop!  And that there R other Cats in the neighborhood 2.

I have been asking others who have Cats, "How often do theyr Cats poop"?   But no one knows, they just assume, twice 2 several times a day, or just don't care.

O how glad I am 4 this information.  Who would have ever thought this information could b of value.

It's not just 4 my pride...but 4 the Health of my Cats!
