With all our international members (particularly thinking of US and UK here) I thought it'd be fun to have an English to English translation thread. For example... here are some I know

US .... UK
Diaper .... Nappy
Sandwich .... Buttie

Do you have any?

That actually happened to my husband (German, but used to American English). An English friend was visiting, and he was going into town, and asked if anybody needed anything. She asked him to pick up some rubbers for her, and I forgot to make sure he knew exactly what she meant. You should have seen her face when he brought back a box of condoms.

I believe a barrister represents somebody before the court, whereas a solicitor handles more mundane matters like filing for divorce, drawing up wills, etc..

Wikipedia does a better job than I was about to do, but it's pretty much what I expected.
