I found that amazing!!!!

Kinda makes me wonder though....how would they do it in a case like the lady in Florida like a year ago?? She was being tube fed, a vegetable....family wanted to keep her alive, hubby wanted to stop feeding her. Well, they stopped feeding her & let her die.

That woman in Florida had been in a vegetative state for many years -- over a decade, I think. An autopsy found that her brain had physically deteriorated badly, literally shrunk inside her skull... she hadn't been in there for a very long time.

But you're right, this does mean that people will have to think a lot harder before "pulling the plug" on coma patients. I've told my family if something like that ever happens to me, don't give up too easily!

I quit watching much on the gal in Florida. I felt so bad for her family to have to make such a decision....and they were so divided.

Not to hijack or to drag this too OT....but for how long can you be in a coma/vegetative state before the brain is "melted" to the point they cannot do the "jump start" thing?
I read the article, but I'm tired & it didn't make complete sense!

there was no win in the her case, i did feel bad for her, how at the same time thinking if i was in her spot, i would want someone just to shoot me. it made no sense to let her starve to death.

it did not go into for how long before they could do it. Sense it is all new.
i would think it would depends on the area in the brian that was damanged, if sometihng like this could help them or not.

Yes, I imagine the questions we're thinking of are the same ones they're about to start doing research on.

And Natalie, yes... it broke my heart the way it ended. I agreed with the decision to let her go, but I still felt so bad for her parents -- it seemed to me that they should have the final word, rather than her husband, even if they were wrong.
