Why do they call the area just off the coastlines "Sound"?

I believe it goes back to the days when they tested the depth of the water by doing soundings. I live in a place called Parry Sound, and it's on a very deep inland harbour.
A deep harbour is called a sound..
A deep harbour is called a sound..
It's from the Old Norse (think Viking) word for "strait": "sund".

thanks so much! I had been on GoogleEarth, and went down the coast of
Florida when I saw the name of the Sound down there, (can't remember
right off ) and I remembered hearing of another so I just thought I'd would ask!
