This cat stepped unto my patio and the first thing I noticed was his tail... I was wondering what was wrong with it and how serious it is.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
This is very serious and kitty needs a vet ASAP. If there is ANY way you can put out a trap to trap this kitty, please do so!

You can call around to local vets to see if someone has a trap you can borrow. If you feel you don't want to be responsible for this, you can call local rescue groups to see if they can help. If you want to do this, you can also call the local rescue groups to see if you can rent or borrow a trap from them.

Here are some helpful links. To find local rescue groups:

http://www.pets911.com/organizations/organizations.php
http://www.alleycat.org/orgs.html

If you want assistance, apart from contacting those groups, you can contact the Best Friends No More Homeless Pet network: http://www.bestfriends.org/nomorehom...ts/thenetwork/

There is a link for "E-mail animal help" down at the bottom right-hand side of the page.

Please keep us posted!

Oh - this poor baby!

It is extremely serious.

I had this exact same situation except my feral kitty had lacerations in the middle of his tail, not the tip. I watched it for many weeks.

He was not lethargic and his tail did not seem to be infected and he had a good appetite. But his tail was not healing and it continued to have scabs that did reopened and it did not look like it was healing.

Frankly my feral cat's tail did not look anywhere near as bad as the picture of your cat's tail.

Ultimately I trapped my cat (again, I had TNR'd him 7 months earlier) and took him to the vet where they determined he needed his tail amputated.

The reason they amputate a lot of the tail is because cats frequently mutilate any section of their tail with bandages or other things on it.

I do not know if you are attached to the kitty you took a picture of, but you should trap him and take him to your local anti-cruelty and see if you can get the tail taken off for a nominal fee. It will save his life.
