We adopted a 11 week old kitten from the animal shelter. He's coming this Saturday. I bought scoopfree litter box which uses freshstep crystal. But the lady in the shelter insisted I should use clay based litter for the kitten and change to other litter when the kitten is older. I wonder if anyone has used freshstep crystal as kitten's litter?

thx,

I wouldn't use clumping clay or crystals at all until you know if kitty likes to eat his litter. I would use a paper-based (Yesterday's News), corn (World's Best Cat Litter), or wheat (Sweat Scoop).

They do usually grow out of the litter eating. Also, remember his feet are very tender and there are many adult cats that are picky about the way their litter feels on their paws.

I brought my kitten home at 5 weeks (I know, i know, WAY too young, the pet store lied about his age, but that's a whole other story.) and used the crystal litter from the get go with no problems.

I`ve never tried fresh Step " sandy type" litter....but I had to buy some of the Fresh Step clay with odor crystals in it last week when Walmart was out of the usual Tidy Cat (clay type) with odor crystals that I always buy. It only left it in the litter box for 2 days and dumped the whole thing. It was soooo dusty that even I could`nt stand to sift it without choking half to death...I could`nt stand to think of the cats having to dig around in it stirring up dust.
My hubby had to go into the next town to buy our usual!

I've tried 3 types of crystal litter and I think FreshStep was the most dusty. Right now I'm using Litter Pearls, and I think its my favorite.

TRY a NATURAL clumping like swheet scoop or WBCL or use traditional cat litter non clumping clay

You can also try nature's miracle litter. I think it's cheaper than WBCL and it's natural also.
