Around here i have yet to encounter a vet that has not asked you if you wanted declawing done when you took the cat in to be altered. It's still considered "routine"

Now all that said, my breeder specially said in the buyers contract that the cats are NOT to be.. so obviously some people are more educated on it but the majority of the vets certainly aren't

Great news for Norfolk! I wish they would ban it everywhere in this state, as well as the rest of the country.

Our adoption application has a question about whether they plan to declaw the cat. If they circle yes, or maybe, then they do not get one of our cats. We do have some previously declawed and if those are available we would offer one of those, but we want a kitties to stay as whole as they came to us.

I hold no ill feelings. I'm glad I came here first before I decided to do anything with them. I'm having lots of fun buying scratching posts (that would be the shopper in me

My vet actually has a printed schedule of shots and procedures they hand you when you first bring in your kitten. It has on there "6 months - neuter/spade and declaw". It's so common around my area. I don't know a single person that doesn't have their cats declawed, and some who have cats with all 4 paws declawed. My family is a big cat family, each of my siblings have at least 2 cats. All of them declawed, except for my two. Hopefully they will follow in my footsteps with leaving all of their claws intact.

My Vet will NOT declaw a cat and neither will any of the other Vets in his office.

I was there one time and I can't remember what for, but anyway this Woman came in and wanted to make an appointment to have her cat spayed and declawed.
The girl at the desk told her that one of the Vets would be happy to spay her cat, but that they did not declaw cats.
The Woman wanted to know why she couldn't have it done if she was willing to pay for it and demaned to see one of the Vets.

The Woman was so loud that my Vet came out from the back and asked what the problem was...the Woman said that the girl at the desk had been rude
HARDELY, she was very calm it was the Woman who had been rude.
Then she told the Vet that she didn't see why she couldn't have her cat declawed if she was paying for it.
In front of a very full waiting room my Vet looked at her and said..."If you want to mutilate your cat, you're going to have to go somewhere else we will not do it."
She said that if that's the way he was going to be then she would go somewhere else...he told her "Good luck with that, no Vet within 50 miles will declaw a cat."

I wanted to stand up an

I didn't know that anyone actually declawed a cat until I joined this forum. I had no idea such a procedure existed.

That is so very, very sad. I hope you will be able to now educate your friends and family about how cruel and inhumane declawing is.

I wish it were this way for everyone, everywhere.

Unfortunately, in the US pets are looked upon as "property" and not precious little lives, therefore people can do whatever they want with their property as long as they are not hurting other people. The "property" has no say in the matter.

I do believe this attitude is changing and people are seeing their pets as family members...then again, the way some people treat their children

My vet has a strict no declaw policy, that is one of the reasons I go there

AOMG Your vet is AWESOME!!

Vets like that should keep little "why you shouldn't declaw" pamphlets to give to people like that. It's usually just ignorance.

He's something else...I LOVE him.

I really think if she would have calmly asked him why he would have explained things to her, but given her attitude he proably knew no matter what he said that she wasn't going to listen.

He and I talked about the whole declawing issue at great length one time.
He told me that his parents didn't spend all that money to send him to Vet school so that he could hurt animals, they spent it so that he could help them and take away their pain.

While the rest of world had banned declawing, ear cropping and tail docking, breeders in Canada and the US are fighting to have their undocked animals show in the rings. Most breed judges will either excuse tailed dogs, or place them at the end of the lineup, regardless of their conformation quality.

Really tells you something about the mentality over here.

I had posted an earlier thread about when to declaw and neuter my two boy kitties. After reading all the responses, I never realized that declawing is illegal in the UK and other parts of the world. Why not here? I find this interesting that it's illegal elsewhere but not in the US. Everyone seems well educated on this subject and thought maybe someone knows why this is still allowed in the US.
By the way, I decided to not declaw them

anyway back to the thread discussion, my apologies if this has already been mentioned but California and Colorado have made declawing illegal. However, I don't know if either of the regulations (or other country regulations) are worded to include large cats (lions, cougars, leopards etc) because those cats have a truly horrible time with it.

Furballsmom Furballsmom I may be mistaken, but in California, I think only the declawing of large or exotic cats is illegal throughout the state. There are some individual cities that have banned the declawing of domestic cats, like San Francisco, Berkeley, and Los Angeles. However, in any city that has not enacted its own ban on declawing domestic cats, the horrid procedure continues to be practiced.

I am glad to hear that you didn’t have your cats declaw. Closed to 20 years ago, I had both my female and male cats declawed. Like most people, I was under educate about the physical and emotion damage the declawed cats can or may have.

I saw my female cat have physical pain after she was declawed that I promise never to do that to another cat. I had a few cats while she was living and after she die. I have kept my promise since then.

I couldn’t see the emotional pain that both had may go through.

When I did volunteer work for a small animal group, declawed cats were the hardest to find homes for. I had assumed that because we were in farm country, people fear that if their cats should get out, they will have no protection.

I, also, seen the emotion impact that declawing does to cats. We once had a cat with all four paws declawed. He was hard to handle. Not only because he was declawed, but also, he was abandoned by his owners.

In the end, he was very fortunate. It was adopted by a very lovely family. He and the children play together.

Many cat owners do not think what would happen to declaw cats if they no longer can take care of them or simple choice not to.
