My kitty was diagnosed with a UTI on Sunday after I observed her trying to pee several times to no avail. I immediately started her on Clavamox as directed by the vet. She gets 2cc in the a.m. and 2cc in the p.m. (because she's a big girl
). So, she'd had her 2 Sunday doses, 2 Monday doses, and so far, 1 dose today. They vet told me it would take a couple days to take full effect. Now it's Tuesday and she's still going in the box and trying to pee several times. Stuff does come out, but just a teeny bit at a time. I'm used to seeing 3-4 big "pee clumps" in there a day, and to go from that to almost nothing makes me concerned. Someone please tell me it will get better! Or am I just over reacting and being impatient? When is she going to stop trying to pee all the time? Should I take her back to the vet? She seems perfectly happy/healthy otherwise. Still eating and I'm assuming drinking, but no big pee clumps
. She's on all wet food BTW. Argh... I think I just need to relax and let the medicine work.

I would think the meds will eventually work. In the mean time I would keep an eye on her bladder and how full it gets. Just feel to see if it is enlaged. She will surely let you know if she can't go. If it doesn't get better in a day or two I would call the vet. Three days you should start to see impovement. Penacillan works remarkably fast. Sorry I can't be of any more help, but I am sure she will be fine.

It usually does take a few days. Clavamox didn't work for Summer. If it doesn't get better soon, take her back to the vet and get another antibiotic such as baytril. When is her re-check?

Some UTI's are just more difficult to treat than others. As others have suggested, give it a bit more time and call your vet if it doesn't clear up. I've heard people on this site say that they have had to switch meds a few times and/or keep them on the antibiotics for weeks.

Do you have her on wet food and how is her water intake? A water fountain will help if you don't have one. I can send you an article on switching from dry to wet food if you PM your e-mail address. It's a very long Word document.

She's been on all wet for over a month, she has a drinking fountain, and seems to be eating like her usual pig self and I rarely see her drink (but that's normal for her being on all wet). Thanks!

The vet told me it takes oral antibiotics at least 48 hours to start working. When Anna had her UTI, she also got a dose of anti-infammatory and it gave her immediate relief, as soon as we got back from the vets. It may take a little longer for the swelling to go down if she is on antibiotics only. Amazing how we suffer right along with them!!

I did get the Clavamox from the shelter but also got another bottle at the vet's when I took her in yesterday morning. The vet examined her and basically had a "wait and see" approach (didn't test urine). She said if she doesn't get better they could put her on a stronger antibiotic, and if it keeps recurring they'd then do a urinalysis to see what's up. But she treated it like it was an isolated incident since this was her first one ever.

I blame myself and I feel so guilty. She had a "dirty bum" which probably didn't help. It was hard for me to clean it because her hair is really long down there and she messes all over herself. She hates washcloths and wipes but I do give her baths now and then. Also, she was on all fishy food which can contribute to higher phos., plus she was on extra fiber which could draw moister from her bladder to her stools, thus making her urine more concetrated. I'm such a bad mommy and here I thought I was doing everything right!
