What a dreadful woman! Who knows what she may have used your poor little doggie for... probably a puppy mill or something worse. I'm so pleased that you trusted your instincts.

I would send an email back saying `I will have a great life - now I know my baby isn't going to a questionable home'. Lol. No, don't send that....

I HAVE NEVERused anything but water in the spray bottle and "without cruelty or fear" My animals do not fear me and to say that is insane! We used the spray bottle just like you done with yours and it worked wonders...

I used to spray the wall near Sashka with a water pistol whenever she abseiled up my hat stand. Worked wonders - only used it twice and the sound and smell of the water put her off. I never wet her with it - ever - but just the wall. It still worked. After that I only had to reach for it and she would stop. It's a form of negative operant conditioning and can be done without cruelty or fear.

I was agreeing with you!! I hope it didn't sound like I was saying you were doing any of those things - I was just adding some more advice to the advice you'd already posted

Anyway, Monica, you haven't said anything about the training methods you've been using to stop Yoda from chasing the cats??

As far as training methods~I have used the water bottle....and I always yell "no" to him! Its just really frustrating!!!

He does it outside as well, because some of my cats go out doors and when that happens they run as fast as they can and usually end up in a tree or on top of my car! Ughhh...Im telling ya I give up!

My cats come before he does.....and I dont mean that mean, its just that they do!!!

My boston has chased our cats since we got him almost 2 years ago. He generally leaves the inside cats alone now, and most of the time ignores the outside ones as well.

Inside cats:
We had him on lead all the time, and if he tried to chase the cats he received a correction and was redirected with a toy or treat. Praised happily when he ignored them, or looked at them but didn't chase them.
Eventually he was just dragging the leash around, we would grab it and correct if needed, praise when appropriate.
Once he was leash-free, if he chased the cats we would pick him up and place him in his crate on time-out, no treats. After ten minutes or so we would let him out and praise him when he walked past the cats.
Now he's out with them unsupervised all the time (he's in crate when I leave, but that's not because of the cats) and rarely ever bats and eyes at them.

Outside cats:
Much the same as the indoors. Took him out on lead, corrected and redirected. If he didn't heed the correction, he was placed inside in a time-out. Now he drags a 30 ft line all the time. The cats know not to run when he's outside, or he will chase them. They just walk around or sunbathe. If he gets too rude, they hiss and swat at him.

Butters has very very high prey drive, and if he could learn to not chase cats, any dog can.
Our rescue rott wanted to eat our kittens when they were little, now they sleep with her. It takes time and consistency.

You should really try training before rehoming - because he could just end up on the rehoming merry-go-round which would be awful. Another thing is, your other dogs could start - or start up with something else, possibly worse. Which would leave you with wanting to rehome them, too.

Rehoming when a behaviour problem crops up is not the way to make the best of a situation. This happens to too many dogs. You say your cats come first, and I guess if that is the way it is then that's the way it is. But dogs are much more high maintenance than cats and do require some positive training to integrate properly.

I'm really, really not trying to lecture you - I'm really not! But I see so many dogs just given up on because of easy-to-fix problems, and it breaks my heart. Yelling `no' and spraying water is not effective, in this case (and isn't in most cases, to be honest). You need to find something else and you've been given some good advice and good links here.

You can pm me if you want some proper, structured training advice
