Today I woke up after a beautiful 8hrs sleep with my darling Shinya next to me - there's nothing like a good nights sleep with your cats to make you wake up feeling refreshed. I would have kept sleeping but Shinya decided it was time for her to be pampered - she always gets this way after we've snuggled together all night, I get woken up to her pushing her head under my hand as if to say LOVE MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

So, I give her some attention until her loving bites started (she's always been a big biter but now she's 4 months old it HURTS, and I've got to stop her) so I got up to check on my new baby Yuna (I've only had her for under 3 days so she can't sleep with us yet). Walked into her room and...

NO CAT.

I looked behind the curtains, the window ledge, in her carry I still had open in there.. opened the cupboards in case she somehow got in.. I started to panic - I have no idea why I mean, I live in an apartment on the 34th floor and the balcony doors are locked so, even if she somehow managed to get out of that room, she couldn't leave the apartment. But I was freaking all the same...

It was after about 5mins when I suddenly looked at the box in the corner (I moved only a few months back and there are still packed up boxes EVERYWHERE) and thought to myself "Hey.. is that thing OPEN?!?!?!", having assumed it was taped shut. Walked over to it, opened it, and low and behold, there was my baby curled up in a towel looking up at me as if to say "Good morning! What's up?"

That had me worried!!

Yours is not the first panicked post about a missing kitten from a locked room. They have a way of hiding which is uncanny. Lucy has a hiding place here in the house that I cannot figure out though I will look and look. Suddenly she just appears in the hallway as if by magic.

I'm glad you found her.

Haha, yeah! Shinya does that! I'll be looking all over and then suddenly she'll just APPEAR... from the direction I just checked!

Maybe they have the magical secret ability to be invisible..

Where my cats are
She pulled one on ya good there! Mooch and Noodles escaped their bathroom one of the first nights we had them here. They were about 11 weeks old...and small enough to fit under the door! Lord only knows how long they had free regin of the house before I heard them playing, by the fish tank of course! By that time it was morning!

UNDER the door??!?!?! Wow, either that was a sizeable gap under the door or those were some TINY TINY kittens!!!!

Seems like every time I put Yuna back in her room (if I don't put her away, she won't sleep! Like a child she just gets over excited and starts climbing the curtains and attacking feet!) she ends up crawling into that little box. I really have no idea how she's getting in there and managing to CLOSE the lid after her. But it really is always perfectly closed, and she just curls up in a ball on a towel in there. I totally get it though, if I were her, I'd be in there too!! It looks cosy.

i walk over say her name a couple of times, and still nothing, finally i reched out to poke her, and she went YEWO!!!!!! and jumped about 5 feet in the air.... heeh , i guess she was really sound asleep

Argh, I'd totally be thinking she was dead too! Cause I'm just paranoid like that!

I actually just heard this very cardboard box-y sound coming from the next room so I think she must just be jumping on the lid at full force so she falls into it, then it just bounces shut after her.

She seems perfectly content in there though and I never hear her struggling to get free, so I don't think she's trapped.. I think it's just her own private space.. hehe.

In my own world, its much nicer there
Oh boy I was spewing yesterday, I put Neko and Ryu into the dining room together so they could try get along, I went back later to check on them and there was Ryu all happy like La de da. but no Neko, so I ventured in and looked behind the curtains, under the table and chairs, on top of the wardrobe. And I thought to myself
where can the little
be
. Then I looked over at the litter box which has a lid so I looked in there and..... NOPE not there either, now I tell you I was at the point of ripping out all my hair trying to find him (but I shaved it all off the other week).
Suddenly I saw 1 place, that I hadn't checked but thought it was impossible for him to access. He had gotten into a draw, that was only open about 3 inches at the max, I was like damn how on earth did you squeeze in there? he looked at me as if to say "what are trying to say? I'm fat or something?"
It gets more interesting and no one will believe this, but I got him out of the draw, closed it and went away again, only to come back and find it open, 3 inches again and him inside.

No we don't have a ghost, I repeated the process but stayed to observe. The little
opens it himself, I saw it with my own 2 eyes, he puts his paw on the top edge of the draw, slides his claws between the tiny gap and pulls it
Just enough to fit his head, then his body becomes snake like and flattens so he can fit in there. Totally amazing.

Oh I can TOTALLY beleive it!!!!!

I actually have this fear that Yuna is going to work out how to open DOORS soon!! x___x I've heard that Abyssinians are pretty clever and.. well.. Yuna like, THROWS herself at closed doors she wants to get into at full force! She just LEAPS into the sky and paws at it as high as she can. I think it's only a matter of time before she jumps on the door handle and realizes "Hey!! I can OPEN DOORS!!!"

If this does happen, all I can say is... trust me to get a door opening cat!!!!!!

It really is amazing where they can fit and hide. Seb is 14 lbs and still manages to scare me. Just when I have convinced myself that he has managed to jump out the window, he'll wonder out, fresh from a nap. The only time I really worry is when the smoke alarm goes off and he disappears for hours

LOL it's Shinya you really need to be concerned about opening doors, I have read alot about RB's and they are said to be very intelligent and able to open doors by themselves

Sadly though my Diego seems to be too dopey to do anything cool like that.

Perhaps.. but Shinya is very much of the "Now, I COULD try and do something clever like open that door over there... but I could also just lie here and have you pamper me.. " way of thinking it would seem! Though I get the feeling Yuna's craziness is going to have an interesting effect on her, that's for sure!!!!

If you want to see how easy a kitten can squeeze under a door, check out the snippet at about 25 seconds into this video.

Both my cats can completely disappear in my bedroom, and believe me, there's not too many places they can disappear into, but in my room, they become regular Houdinis!

Sophia wasn't that obvious. The day after we adopted her, I left the door open in the room I had her in so she could come out and investigate the house if she wanted. Well, I went to check on her about an hour later and she wasn't in "her" room. Good, figured she'd be able to find...
ONE HOUR LATER, after checking EVERYWHERE in my house, guess where I found her? IN A LITTLE CUT OUT SQUARE BEHIND THE DRYER IN THE LAUNDRY ROOM! I had jumped up on the dryer to see if she'd gone behind there and caught a glimpse of a tail sticking out from the wall where the cut out is for the dryer hose.
talk about a great hiding place!! Of course, she doesn't fit in there anymore!
