My cat, Alcott, has horrible teeth-- I think. I've never had cats before, so it's hard to be certain, but his breath smells terrible and his back teeth are very discolored at the base. He eats a high quality food, and hasn't stopped eating/wanting to eat at all. I've tried brushing his teeth on my own, but they bled quite a bit.
I'd rather not rush him to the vet since money is very tight for me; any thoughts?

You can buy cat toothpaste from your vet or at the pet store. That should help. Bad teeth can be very dangerous to cats because if an infection spreads it can be deadly.

If your cat's gums bled when you brushed his teeth he already has periodontitis and it's beyond tooth brushing. He needs to go to a vet for a dental.
