WARNING – Get Rid of Toys made from Pipe Cleaners!!!

I just want to warn everyone of a danger that never occurred to me
until this weekend.

At various shows, I have received little cat toys made from pipe
cleaners – often twisted to look like a bug or caterpillar – and I
have just tossed them into the show bag for future use. I thought
this was a nice little bonus from the clubs who did this and have
never had a second thought about giving them to my cats. This
weekend, I tossed one into my cat's cage on Saturday afternoon and
watched while he tossed it and chased it and generally had fun with
it. Later when I returned to my cage I found the toy MINUS one of
its antennae! I looked everywhere in the area (even sifted the
litter) but could not find the missing portion of the pipe cleaner.
I watched the cat closely for the rest of the weekend; he seemed OK
until Monday morning as we were standing in the security line at the
airport when he started to vomit. He vomited several times on the
way home so the moment we got home, I headed for the vet. Sure
enough, the x-ray showed the pipe cleaner segment lodged in the
stomach with a very sharp point visable and in a position that the
vet did not think it would pass on its own. Therefore, we had to
have emergency surgery to remove the pipe cleaner segment; it all
came out in one piece and the cat should be OK but this was a very
scary situation.

I have now disposed of all the pipe cleaner toys that I had and will
never risk giving one to a cat again. I would recommend that anyone
reading this do the same. I will post this on the few lists that I
have access to and will ask a friend to post to the CFA list
(permission to post to any other list is given).

Oh gosh! I`m so sorry that you kitty had to go through surgery....and sorry that you had to go through such a scare.
The wire in bread twisties is also a "no no" in my opinion. It would be too easy for a cat to accidently ingest something that is in their mouth (and they are as bad as human babies about that!) A wire could poke a hole in thier intestine on it`s way through...and if you were not aware.... your kitty could end up over the rainbow bridge.
I try to keep my home as free of scary stuff as I would if I had a human baby.
And I carefully inspect all store boughten toys that are MADE for cats....some of them are NOT safe.

Thanks for posting that, Anne. I've seen those pipe cleaner toys, and can really picture a cat accidentally swallowing a piece.

Wow, I personally do not have any and thanks to your story i never will. Id say it would almost be common sense due to the wire and possible ingestion, but no one expects for these things to happen, especially when they are toys produced for our kitties!

Watching the robins sing!
I am so glad that you noticed that part of the toy was missing - thank goodness! I will go and "clean up" the cat toys for any potential dangerous toys! I hope that your cat recovers quickly!

That's exactly the problem, isn't it? So many things we wouldn't in a million years offer to our cats to play with, but when they are marketed as cat toys it's all too easy to assume that any risks have been considered and dealt with in the manufacture. Just goes to show: let the buyer beware!

Thank you for posting this.

I agree... Like for instance now thinking about it... I get those pom pom balls for my kitty (she swears by them) which we all know is like tinsel... Well it if pieces came loose she could choke on it. I try to be careful even with those mice that have eyes... Alot of toys for our kitties out on the market have the potential to cause harm if pieces are ingested!

We get the furry little toy mice, and I always pull the tails off before I give them to the cats (gee, that sounds really cruel..
). I don't want the kitties pulling off and swallowing them though.

I try to be careful what I let the girls play with, and throw away toys as soon as they start to look ratty.

This is a great reminder, thanks!

I know Donna Fuller and her cats - my RB was out of some of them

I know the toys she's referring to. But when I get them I kinda undo them and retwist them so that no points or loose pieces are showing. But will keep it in mind in the future

Thanks for posting.

And I too look at the toys and test them for loose pieces. Many of the mice are tailess or eyeless
