My cats are addicted to toilet water which I find totally disgusting, but it seems to be the only water that they really love to slurp up. I try to change their water bowl at least twice a day now to keep things "fresh," but they only drink outta there if it's the last resort, i.e. me closing the toilet lid, closing the bathroom door, etc.

Anyway, I'm told that cats are quite fickle about what they put in their body so I can only assume that they know what's good for them. Should I just let them drink out of the toilet? After reading through the boards it seems like water intake can be problematic with cats so should I just be grateful that they're interested in water in the first place? I mean, sometimes it's kinda scary cause when I open the bathroom door in the morning, they RUSH to the toilet...which makes me think that maybe they're reeeally thirsty.

I wouldn't mind them drinking outta there except that's kinda my litter box, so yeah...it's gross. Bad for them?

You are right about not wanting your pets to drink out of the toilet.

Toilets no matter how clean you think they are are absolutely filthy with bacteria: deadly bacteria.

I sure wouldn't take a drink out of my toilet no matter how many times I cleaned it. I sure wouldn't let my pets drink from it either.

The reason your cats like it though is because it's cold and "fresh" and hasn't been sitting there all day getting warm.

I change my cats' water several times per day and I add ice cubes to it in the summer to keep it cool for them. When I can afford it I want to get one of those "fountains" for water for them. It keeps the water cool and moving, which is more appealing to cats.

I keep the lid of the toilet down at all times when not in use to keep Riley out of it. Now if I could only keep him from drinking out of the shower drain

Sophie and Mollie have now taught Cosmo to "hit the tub" after I get out!
I leave a latte cup filled with water on the bathroom sink, otherwise they will go into the sink and drink from that drain as well-argggh!

I wouldn't let my cats drink out of the toilet. What kind of water bowls do you have for them? Have you tried different types of bowls (metal, glass, ceramic)? Or maybe they don't like the location of the water bowl. A water fountain usually gets cats to drink more, also. There are a lot of options you could try.
