I just went to sift the litter after Tedy was in it and found what looks like some blood in his poop.....what could this be????
He`s acting perfectly fine ...has been playing with the other 2 cats all evening and just got done eating moments before he went into the litter....he`s not acting sick.
I saved the poop in a plastic container and put it in the refrigerator to take to the vet first thing in the morning....or do I need to keep it out of the refrigerator and keep it at room temp or call the vet now???
Thanks for any input from ANYBODY!
Linda

How Much blood is there - a smear or a teaspoon?
Was the stool normal or was it hard?
Bright red. Softer than usual stool (not like a toosie roll, but not runny either) It was on and in it, but not all through it. Certainly nowhere near a teaspoon. I scooped it out and saw the blood, dumped it inot a plastic container and used a tissue to sort of swab it to see if it was REALLY blood cause I could`nt belive my eyes. (I told you I was freaked out) I only swabbed it the once cause I was afraid if i did it again that the vet could`nt see blood in the stool.
THANKS for responding to my thread....the few minutes it took for someone to do so felt like a loooong time.

Call the vet in the morning - unless you see any more bleeding tonight. It sounds like it was a small amount of blood - it always spreads and looks worse than it usually is.

If the stool had been hard, it could have been hemorrhoids. With a soft stool, I'm not sure.

If you see more bleeding, or if you get concerned about about how he is acting, take him to the ER vet.

Good luck! Let us know what the vet says.

Good morning Mom of 4,
I jumped right up this morning to clean the littler out, hoping to be able to catch each kitty when they went in there this morning, just to make SURE it was Tedy`s poop with the blood and not one of the other 2.....and low and behold, as soon as I finished, Tedy came walking into the bathroom and pooped right before my eys....I was even able to catch him out of the litter before he covered it up, so that it would have the least amout of litter on it as possible. There was a little bit of blood in this stool too...about the same as last night....and the poop was "smoushy" again instead of turds.....come to think of it, I`ve noticed that somebodys poop was`nt like toosie rolls for the past few days...must have been Tedy.
I`m taking the poop into the vet this morning to be tested for "whatever".
I hope it is`nt anything serious. Don`t know how he could have gotten worms, as he has never been outside since we got him at 6 months and he was wormed them and checked later....and he is almost 3 years old now.
Is that possible?

If the stool comes negative for worms, I'd take him in for the vet to check. One episode of rectal could be a random thing, but two episodes make a pattern.

Think about any change in his life - foods, activities, people/pets - basically any changes from the last three months. (Thinking stress leading to IBD or something similar) any stress in your life over the past 3 months - they pick up our vibes so well.

An yes, worms would still be possible. It's flea season here and it is possible for me to accidentally bring them inside.

Neg for worms...and the vet thinks he`s in excellent health (Took the cat in too, instead of just the poopie) He said that maybe the change in what he`s been eating lately may have caused irratation...and he said there was very little blood. (I think he thinks i`m being overly protective for such a small amout....but there is`nt supposed to be ANY blood in your poop at all, is there?)
He did mention the same thing that you did about stress....and that having added a 3rd cat (year old high energy kitten about 6 weeks ago) may be upsetting him since he`s such a "laid back" cat. (The kitten does try to push him to play more than he wants to and he gets sort of grouchy about it)
We also sent for the "freebies" that someone offered websites to on TSC so they have been getting more of those and they are different kinds from different places.....so maybe that is playing a part too...????
I brought Tedy home...he`s eating and drinking and playing just fine....so maybe I am being overly protective.....but we are going to stick to our reg food and no treats for a few days and watch him and the litter box close.
If this does`nt correct it`self in a short time then we are going to another vet to get a second opinion.
Thanks so much for all your input....I really appreciated having someone to talk to when i was so worried about Tedy....we`ve never had this happen before and it was freaking me out.

Changes in diet can certainly cause bowel irratation, particularly if the change wasn't done slowly. Maybe you would find it reassuring to know that my Coco had a loose stool, frequently with a bit of blood, for 12 months and she was in perfect health the whole time. I finally found that she needed a probiotic supplement with her meals to let her properly digest and absorb food.

I hope your problem clears up soon!

Thanks you for the words of encouragement Mschauer!
I`m glad your kitty was OK too....and am hoping also that whatever the problem with Tedy is that it will clear up shortly.
TCS is a great place with all you kitty folks that care.....even if the problems ends up being something simple. When you don`t know....esp when you see blood...it`s so good to have had a place to bounce your fears!
