Question for those who use dog Advantage

For anyone who buys the large dog tubes of Advantage and splits it among the cats: Do you have to use a whole tube once you open it? Can "leftovers" be saved for the next month? And if you use most of a tube and have a little left, how do you dispose of it? Is it safe to just throw it in the trash?

I'm thinking of doing this to save money, but I'm not sure what size would be best to get (for two medium sized dogs and two small cats).

I use frontline this way. I have one extra dose every other month. I store it in an air tight container until the following month and if I have a little bit left over but not enough for a full does I just toss it.

If it isn't an airtight container, it will evaporate rather quickley.

I didn't think you could use dog advantage on cats. They have their own cats advantage. I heard cats can get sick if they use the ones for dogs. I could be wrong but make sure you check with someone who knows first!!

You can only use the original Advantage. DO NOT USE K-9 Advantix or Advantage Multi for dogs.

It's good to point out that you should talk to your vet before using any type of flea treatment this way.

Ditto the Vet consult

A vet won't admit that you can do this - Advantage will tell you that it is unethical (they make more money selling for individual animals). I learned it from a vet tech who explained that it is absolutely essential to read the entire list of ingredients in the cat and dog version to make sure they are the same. You cannot use Advantix and others on cats.

You're right, my vet couldn't believe I knew about this and she wasn't happy at all. Once she knew that I really knew what I was talking about she agreed that it could be done and even gave me a needle and vial to make dispersement easier. She still wasn't happy though.

Thanks, everyone! I am taking one of my cats to the vet for her annual checkup pretty soon, but I don't know what it will accomplish if I ask about splitting the Advantage. My vet recommends Frontline, which we have been using for years. It just isn't working as well anymore, hence the switch to Advantage. I got my mom to agree to this by pointing out the difference in price, but if the vet says no she will go by that.

Anyway, thanks for answering my questions. It sounds like it wouldn't work well to save the little bit I'll have left, so I'll just throw it away.

So how much ml are you supposed to use on cats under and over 9lb? Also I have a cat that's 25lbs so no idea on how much to use on him?
