I have some sad news to share, my dad passed away today after a long illness. He has been going downhill for about a year now, as he has copd and emphazema (sp?) We just knew it was a matter of time. Last week my mom found him unconcious on the living room floor, so we took him to the hospital, and he had pneumonia. so they put him on a ventilator for awhile and it didn't work. They wanted to do a traciostomy but he refused it. So they made him comfortable with morphene, and he just went to sleep. So he died peacefully just like he wanted. But am I weird because i feel relieved and at peace for the first time in over a year??? Its spooky...

I am sorry.

and no your not weird, it took my mother 3 years to die from cancer. It was almost felt like a blessing when she moved on. She was in so much pain, and there was nothing anyone could do for her. Everyone just felt helpless being unable to do anything for her.

She passed away on my birthday.

I'm so sorry to hear this news

I know the feeling of grief mixed with relief though. My Mom was sick for years with Asthma and Emphysema and spent many weeks and months each year in the hospital. She passed on in 1978. Watching someone die from lung disease is very difficult, especially when it's someone you are close with.

I'm so sorry to hear this! I can understand the relief feeling. It's hard to watch someone suffer. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I'm sorry for your loss. It is not weird to feel relieved because you can be comforted in the fact that he is no longer suffering.

I am so sorry. The relief over his pain being done is a "normal" thing....who would want to watch a loved one suffer so?

I think Sibohan is right. The relief you feel is a reflection of your dad's relief and peace of mind... accept it as a gift from him, and know that he rests in peace.

I am so sorry for your loss.

No, I don't think it is weird to feel relieved and at peace...when you see someone you love go through that and being so sick.. it is a relief to know that they are no longer suffering any more.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. And let me echo what others have said: you are not weird to feel relief -- it is not relief that he is gone, but relief that he is no longer suffering. My Mum died of pneumonia at the end of a long struggle with pulmonary fibrosis -- toward the end she could barely say two words without gasping -- it was a relief when that ended. Be gentle with yourself.

I am so sorry. Both my parents died of cancer, and I was my mom's only care giver and when she passed, I felt the same way. I was relieved because she was no longer suffering, but also relieved that the inevetable finally happened and I could deal with it and get on with my life. I know that sounds incredibly selfish, I know. I talk to my priest about it, because I was feeling so guilty for feeling like that, and he said it is perfectly normal and human to feel relief after a long illness like that. Just don't ever feel guilty for being relieved. Your dad is probably relieved too.

Many hugs to you, and if you need to talk PM me.
