I have a 3 month old kitten and I feed her 3 times a day with wet food. I also leave out dry food in another bowl for her to munch on. As soon as I see that the dry bowl is out, I immediately refill it.

I heard that kittens wont over-eat and should be fed as much as they want. Is this true? I dont want to make my kitty overweight by leaving out too much dry food all the time. Should I cut back on the dry all-you-can-eat bowl?

thanks

Opinions vary on that. In the past, I have always "free fed" dry food to kittens. I never had a "fat" kitten (or adult cat for that matter), until Paisley came along...so there are exceptions. She didn't start to get pudgy until about 6 months old (just prior to her spay at 7 months). Granted she was eating a less than ideal dry food, a little light on the protein and heavy on the carbs.

Now, I don't serve dry food anymore. I do have a flexible schedule. So if I had a little kitten in the house again, I think I would stuff them full of wet or raw food (i.e. not dry) in numerous small meals. My methods aren't typical, though.

Most kittens do fine with the "all you can eat" dry.

Thanks Beandip,

I guess I'll just monitor her weight carefully and cut back if it seems like shes gaining too much weight.

Similiar here.. I have my current girl measure free feed ( her bowl holds 12oz ) I give her 1 cup a day for munching///

Wet or raw is best but for a kitten I would say 50 dry and 50 wet till about a yr

I fed Zoey, a rescue kitten, wet twice a day and dry always available. At 10 months, I started getting concerned about her weight, so I switched the dry to an adult infoor formula and continued the wet twice a day (very small amounts as she rarely ate a 1/4 of a small can a day. that seemed to help.
