Last night, my boyfriend wanted to go and visit one of his friends since we were already in the city he lives in. His friend was going to a night club about 20 minutes away and asked if we wanted to go. We were going to go for a bit and hang out and just not drink. When we were just about there, he was like oh wait you aren't 21 are you? Saturday nights at this club you have to be 21 to get in. That is sooo stupid, since our legal drinking age is 19. I am going to be 21 in 2 weeks, but thats still not good enough.

I really don't understand that. What is so bad about being 19 or 20 that you can't go to this night club on a Saturday night. It's perfectly fine any other night.

The club probably has a huge drawing of people on Saturday nights and wants to attract an older crowd, because generally older people spend more money on drinks and are aren't keen on a "teenage crowd".

There are a lot of clubs here like that (in the Boston, MA/Providence, RI area) that some weekends are 25+.

I'm not saying I agree, that really sucked for you!!!! But I've been there.

From what I have noticed, 19 year olds spend a lot of money on drinks because they think its the most fun when you first turn legal drinking age.

25+ when your legal drinking age is 21 is a bit different than 19 and 20 year olds not being able to go to a club on a Saturday night because you have to be 21.

Oh well!

Older women in particular are not going to want to go to a club filled with teenagers.

Since most people (not all, but MOST) go to clubs to meet other people, it's a matter of who is going to show up in more droves and the type of people they're trying to meet.

I mean, this could be a place that is trying to attract a more upscale crowd, and like I said, most older women and men don't want to be surrounded by people who are going there to get bombed. (I'm not saying all "just became legal" drinkers do this, but more do than don't)

Might it also be noted that if you look at the drinks younger people buy in comparison to those that older people generally buy, the fancier the drink, the more expensive it is going to be.

I'm just speaking from experience because I've been through the same thing, and the nicer the place, generally, the older the crowd they are trying to attract. (older crowds also tend to have less "issues" in the club environment)

I've also been to bars that were men 21+, women 18+, because obviously they wanted to attract a completely different type of crowd than the other types I was mentioning.

LoL and I'm thinking way too much into this.

Yeah, I did think too much into it. Let's just say clubbing used to be a huuuge part of my life when I was younger.

I'm concluding you did just hit an unfair situation. So poo on them and their weird rules!!!

Saturday nights are so dangerous, with all the drunk drivers on the road... maybe it's a good idea to limit the drinking opportunities for teenagers that night. Teenagers are less experienced at both drinking and driving, and seem to be more likely to do something stupid -- like both at the same time.

I don't know how it is up there, but in the area where I live, teenagers drink, drive, and kill themselves (and usually carloads of their friends, as well) with horrifying regularity. Certainly 21-year-olds do it, too -- but not as often.

I wasn't a drinker when I was young, and when I think back on those years, I thank heaven I wasn't! We forget that teenagers are still children, really -- their brains are still developing, their life experience has barely begun, and their hormones are completely out of control. Add a two-ton vehicle and mental impairment by alcohol to the mix, and it's a miracle anyone survives to his 21st birthday.

I'm sure it's frustrating to young people in the situation you described. And certainly it's absurd to imagine that you're going to suddenly become an adult on your birthday in two weeks. I don't think anyone has yet come up with a method of protecting teenagers from themselves -- or the rest of us from them -- that is even effective, let alone fair. But we have to try, y'know?

Having said all that, though, I think the others are right: the rule you ran into is probably not about safety, but just about keeping the club's busiest night from becoming overcrowded.
