I'm watching something kind of interesting here. My senior cat, Merfy, who has been slowly beginning to tolerate my rescued new kitten, Isosceles (who, after over two weeks, finally has a clean enough bill of health to interact).

The senior cat has just walked over, very slowly, to about 6 feet from where the kitten is sitting on the couch. She hissed once. The kitten just looked at her.

Then Merfy very calmly sat down, and slowly, very slowly, opened and closed her eyes (I've heard that this is friendly behavior?). Isosceles did this back. Every time he looks away she stops doing it. When he looks back she begins slowly opening and closing her eyes again. There's clearly some kind of communication going on here.

Now the kitten has begun to fall asleep.

Interesting observation - sounds promising. Mitten was 10 yrs old when we got our RB kitten (4 months). He was soooo patient with kittens. They would bug the heck out of him and he simply tolerated the pouncing/biting, etc.

If they got too much he'd either leave the room or calmly lay down on top of them - he was 14 lbs of cat
. They would cry and wiggle out but he never hurt them.

Even when she had a litter of kittens (my RB female), Mitten was a good "momma" - he would babysit the kittens for Kisa and when the kittens were eating, he'd help wash them up afterwards.

Aw, that's so cute! Especially the laying on top thing...if that's not clear, i don't know what is.

i guess it is pretty promising so far. she hasn't raised a paw to him, she's only hissed.

immediately after my last post Merfy yawned and laid down, too. She laid so that her belly was ever so slightly exposed.
