I started coming down with a cold last night when a cool front moved in and the heat and humidity took a hike. I was feeling so rough I left work early last night and picked up some Advil Cold and Sinus (the one with pseudoephedrine). I'm off all weekend with some family heading into town and wanted to try and knock this in the bud before it really took hold since we have a long, long day planned for tomorrow. I ended up with a whole 3.5 hours of sleep today and haven't been able to get back to sleep. I work nights and even when I'm sick I have trouble sleeping at night (or going to bed early). I finally got to sleep around 8:30 this morning and woke up a littler after noon. I didn't overdose the cold medicine but I have a feeling that it's why I can't sleep since I rarely ever use it anymore. One of the lesser side effects is insomnia so I stopped taking it. Hopefully, I'll be able to pass out in a few hours and sleep through the night.

Nyquil, which I don't take anymore at all, has a similar effect on me.

[font= "Century Gothic"]I'm sorry!
*hugs* Nothing worse than being sick when you can't sleep! For colds, my Grandma has this magic potion that always made me better in half the time than when I only took prescribed medicine. Make yourself some green tea or herb tea, either work. Then, to ruin it (
) you add 1 teaspoon of vanilla, a heaping spoonful of honey, lemon or orange juice, and brown sugar. Grandma's Magic Potion works wonders on me.... Even if it doesn't really taste all that great. LOL! To sleep, try warming up some milk and adding nutmeg and cinnamon. Some people don't like the taste, but something about the spices that really calm your nerves and help you sleep.
Try some breathing excercises too! Force yourself to stay still and relax. Then breathe in really really really deep and really slow and hold it for 2 or 3 seconds, then let it out really slow. It helps calm you down and get to sleep.
Hope you get better really soon!

That warm milk with the nutbeg and cinnamon can be made more palatable if you also add a little vanilla extract and sugar...

I have a similar problem with any kind of cold medicine...it just makes me feel so weird. Jumpy, hyper & surreal. Nyquil is the worst. It will put me to sleep, but I will wake up sometime around 1am, & stay wide awake, all night long! I guess my only cold remedy is patience.

[font= "CEntury Gothic"]CarolPetunia: Good idea! I add vanilla extract and brown sugar to the tea to help, if you add it to the milk, it'll probably be easier to down, and the vanilla will probably really help you sleep too.

Pseudoephedrine is actually a stimulant.

This is a random fact, but it's the main ingredient used to make crystal methamphetamine, which if you don't know is pure hardcore speed.

I hope you feel better!!!! Look for something that doesn't have that ingredient, it works great on symptoms, but sometimes can have really adverse effects on people's bodies!!!!
