Our little DHS coughs up hairballs every 2-3 days. It's quite a problem, since she usually coughs up her breakfast with it (thankfully it's dry food). Petromalt doesn't seem to be helping. Olive oil in her food doesn't seem to be helping. We have a water fountain that she drinks from quite regularly. Any other suggestions?

NOTE: our other cat almost never coughs up a hairball...I think he's coughed up a hairball once since we have had him, and it was pretty dry.

I'm not sure what you are feeding, but when we fed a hairball control food (a LONG time ago), that's all mine did was cough up hairballs. So we switched foods and it took care of our problem.

Are you sure that there is hair in the vomit? Sometimes cats will eat too fast and regurgitate a long tube shaped glob of food...with no hair in it. So that "looks" sort of like a hairball, even though there's no hair in it. If that is happening, I would suggest forcing her to slow down while eating. I like the idea of spreading the food out on a large plate (dinner plate size), and/or offering small amounts, waiting a bit, then offering some more.

There is a HUGE hairball every time. She'll cough up the food, and then she will cough up the hairball after that.

Natural Balance (dry only). We free feed them twice a day. I would say each bowl gets about 3/4 cup a day. The bowls are elevated.

Wet should be introduced ... as NB has enough of the right fibers that hairballs should NOT be an issue ... also try serving on a flat dish
