can ya explain corn to me?

i was to the understanding that is one that should not be in the dry foods??

As i have explained in another post Quinlan will not eat the foods that don't have it.. my other two i have weaned off of foods w/corn.

sooo is it ok? and then when is it ok? like in what form? i know their is ground corn, whole grain corn, corn gluten meal etc..etc..

lost in a corn maze here lol

Basically corn is a filler with little nutritional value in it for your kitty. With that said you say one of your kitty's will not eat food unless its in there. Well how high up on the list of ingredients? Is it one of the first or second ingredients or is it much farther down the list.

it's basically undigestible for cats so it goes in one end and out the other if it's high on the ingredient list I'd look for another food, but one good food that has it is Nutro

Corn gluten meal isn't so bad. It comes from the inside of the corn and is used to provide some protein.
Ground corn and corn grits would be filler, as was mentioned.

Nutro is a good food, lots of people use it and have healthy cats.

That is true...and I agree that it "isn't so bad". I wouldn't go so far as to say that it's "good"...which you didn't but I wanted to add that.

The CGM is high in protein but low in the minerals found in meat, and it's also inexpensive. Those minerals (magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, etc) are suspects for urinary/bladder issues....but they are essential to health (in the right amounts).

CGM is also high in methionine, which may have something to do with the theory that it helps produce a more acidic urine. That article doesn't specifically say that, but it goes into why CGM may or may not be effective for that purpose (urine pH).

All of that other corn....yeah, stinky litterbox filler.

With all of that said, I don't like to feed corn. I have a cat w/bladder issues and the day he eats corn again will be the day I eat my socks. It may work, but I don't agree with the logic.

I agree that Nutro is good food but I don't like the corn. Did I already say that?

Corn IS NOT a FILLER ... Corn is not great in digestabitlity .. it is only 30-50 ... Corn gluten meal being a protein only is 66-76% digestable which means it surpasses barley and potatos in that area... Rice ( yep the white kind ) is the most digestable in the GRAIN and /or STARCH with a cat at 75-85%

Do I like alot of corn NO... Is CORN okay ... Yes .... IF you have UTI issues and the cat likes poultry based foods I advise some ...

You will find MANY of the best RESEARCHED and STUDIED foods have some form of corn .... THat lead me to ask my vet about it ...lol.. SHE has an actual degree in animal nutrition so I do often listen up ... Her answer Corn is fine in moderate amounts ( ie not first or second on an ingrediant list) for a HEALTHY or UTI prone cat who eats dry food

IMHO NO canned food with corn should be feed .... and with my raw or homemade foods you wont find corn on the menu

PS ... both my vet and the accupucturist can often tell when a cat is on a formula with NO corn in a dry food /.... PM me if you want to know how and what brands seem to trigger

I really think that a grain is a grain so I wouldn't worry unless the cat is allergic to it.
