Last night, Penny came up to me as I sat on the couch and meowed at me. I thought she was just looking for attention, but no, she wanted dried chicken treats, please.

So I obliged her, and tossed some all around the room like I usually do - the cats seem to prefer "hunting" their treats rather than accepting them by hand. More fun, I guess.

I scattered them in several areas of the room so that each of the three had a "territory" they could hunt and eat their "prey" in. OK, nothing new or different there.

Penny was chomping down on the back of the couch to my left, Ginger was wandering around the periphery and Ferris was hunkered down on the floor in front of the TV, happily pigging out.

Penny, as you may or may not know, is a complete and utter glutton. Once she ate up "her" treats, she started to hunt out the other treat pieces that were scattered about.

There were several pieces on the floor around where Ferris was. Penny came up behind him and started to sniff at a piece that was about 8 inches away from Ferris, and then Ferris suddenly whipped around to face her, growling, ears flat, pupils HUGE.

Penny backed off, he turned back to what he was eating. So she tried to edge in again to get to that one little piece she wanted, and again, Ferris whipped around and growled louder, and the look on his face scared ME.
It was a totally feral, I'm going to fight to the death if you come one paw closer kind of look. Ooooo-eeee, it was pretty serious!

So Penny, smart girl that she is, decided to move on and hunt elsewhere, as there were still plenty of bits of chicken scattered in the room away from Ferris. So she did. Now she's in the cat window seat, again happily chomping away on chicken bits.

This is when Ginger decides to take a stroll by Ferris. After seeing the way he treated Penny a moment before, I was on guard, as I didn't want him attacking my poor, innocent Gingerkitty.

However, to my surprise, he simply sat up and calmly watched Ginger as she walked right up to him, sniffed at him, sniffed at the very piece of chicken that Ferris had just prevented Penny from touching, and then she walked away, tail in the air.

Not one growl from Ferris, not an ear twitch, nothing.
I was all, well I'll be darned!

Then Ferris got up and went in the other room to conduct some important cat business. That's when Penny saw her chance, and went back over to eat the piece that she had wanted that Ferris wouldn't let her have.

These cats, I'll tell ya, they keep things interesting!

He is a smart boy Betsy... he knows that Ginger is no threat to him/his food.... but Penny is a force to be reckonned with... he was just giving her her limits. That's all.

Seriously, he DID! I was shocked (and amused) to see how viciously threatening
he became in a split second!

Then a minute later he was all sweet again.

Charlie steals any treats he can. And if Ling's too slow (most of the time she is) he will steal it almost out of her mouth. Ling's problem is that she just gives up when it comes to food

Ferris sounds like Smudge when it comes to food!

That's so funny that he trusts Ginger so much, but knows Penny will scoff down everything that isn't tied down...

He's just holding his own. He's comfortable with Ginger, they have an established relationship...Penny on the other hand is new, a bit of a piggy (abeit a beautiful piggy) and looking to move up the hierarchy...he's just telling her "not so fast, missy"

It is a little disturbing when our babies show their "wild side".

If I had a buck for every time I've uttered that wish or something close to it, I could retire tomorrow (almost).

Thirding that motion. Sometimes you feel like you can read them perfectly, but sometimes...

Ah, sweet mystery of Cat!
