...there is a little dog a couple of houses up from us who cries when his owners go out. They are nice people - early 20s - and I don't think they realise this happens. They rescued Charlie from the RSPCA and I know they love him, but he does this quiet little sad cry when they're not home. Chester and Ruby get very upset by it.

Well, last night Charlie was crying and the dogs kept trying to go outside. You should see them, they stand at the fence and look in Charlie's direction, it's so sweet.

Last night I gave them a doggy chew as a treat - quite a big one - and Chester took his in his mouth and went and stood by the back door. I let him out, and he paced around outside for a bit, and then he went up to the fence, put his chew at the bottom of the fence, looked in Charlie's direction for a bit, and came back inside. I almost cried. Is that not the sweetest thing you've ever heard?? If only Charlie could know that Chester gave him his treat. Little man.

Over the river and through the woods...
Ohhh...that is too sweet! I have tears in my eyes just picturing that! What a sweet little boy you have. And some people say animals have no emotions...

Do you know you're neighbors well? Or, more importantly, do your dogs know their dog very well. If so, maybe you could suggest setting up play dates occassionally while they are gone. They probably don't even know their baby is lonely while they are gone.

I have to admit, I don't think my dogs would give up a bone or toy to ANYONE, so Chester is one special baby!

or mabye the treat was nasty and he was hoping the other dog would take it
kinda when you slip unwanted food under the table to the dog.... hehehe

Bruce don't ruin my story!!!

I have to admit, I couldn't understand why he wanted to go straight outside after I gave him his treat. It was one of those big Dentabones - he loves those! So gorgeous. I didn't have the heart to pick it up and give it back to him. He just sat there and watched Ruby eat hers.

We don't know the neighbours too well, but well enough for me to say something. I've suggested before that we have Charlie over but he is a rescue, and doesn't really know how to play with other dogs. He is totally fixated on his ball, and that's about it. I know they've been working very hard with him, and I agree, I don't think they realise he's lonely.

The reason I know him is because he used to escape all the time from their back yard and I'd find him. It took them about four tries to discover where he was escaping from, and now he can't anymore. I think he cries partly because he's a rescue and a bit confused, partly because he doesn't have his cut-and-run freedom anymore, and partly from loneliness.

I think I'll go talk to them next week.
