Ok, I know this sounds weird, but my new kitten yawns about 4 or 5 times when he wakes up from naps. It's very cute, but I've never seen any of my other cats do this. I'm wondering if he's getting enough air into his little nostrils when he sleeps! Omg, I sound like one of those super neurotic first time mothers.

Maybe he's just very slow to wake up. One of my cats is awake instantly, ready for anything. Another one takes a long time to wake up and start responding to his environment. Takes after me, I think.
Anyway, unless you notice something else more worrisome, I think it's probably just normal metabolic variation. It's not something I'd worry about anyway. But I could be wrong, so I'm all ears if one of the experts has an explanation.

Yawning serves the purpose of increasing oxygen in the blood stream, so if you think your kitten is yawning excessively, I would have the vet give his heart a good check over when you take him in for his checkup/vaccinations. It may well be nothing to worry about, but it certainly can't hurt to get it checked

Leo does the same thing; I've never seen a cat yawn so much in my life! I asked the vet about it, and she said there didn't appear to be any physical issue. She said it was likely just part of his "waking up" routine. I agree, it's amusing to watch!
