Every year I screw up my city taxes.

Now, I'm not a dumb person, but the form they give me is confusing and hard to understand. I end up thinking that I don't owe anything, but then July will roll around and I'll get a bill.

This year I thought I had the problem licked. I went to a tax professional and paid him $20.00 to fill out the form for me. He screwed it up. I own them $20.00.

It's not the money that matters it's just the fact that I get a bill EVERY year. I think they hate me.

I called him and told him off!

I will never ever go back there again. Like I said it's really not about the money. It's about getting a bill for any amount.

At least I don't owe them $300.00 like I did last year.

i'd request HE pay it. is it just coincidence that his fee & the amount you owe are the same?

I totally agree with you Heather, city taxes are SO confusing.... you don't happen to live in a CCA city do you? I live in Medina, worked (last year) in Valley View but also worked in Medina
in 2005 it was so nice because on their website they had the self-computing thing online, but last year they didn't

It is CCA. I swear to high heaven that I have a college degree, I am reasonably intelligent, and I screw up that form EVERY YEAR!

I am so mad I could just spit.

I think its CCA's plan to have everyone screw up their city taxes, their form is BY FAR the most confusing form on the market

If your tax professional screwed up, you shouldn't have to pay him, it was his fault.

Luckily we have our taxes taken out of our mortage payment every month so I never have to worry about mistakes. Usually we actually get about a $400 escrow overage refund at the beginning of every year so that works for us

If it is like any stupid tax form, it was written by politicians and lawyers. Neither are known for communicating succinctly and clearly.

Have you tried using programs like TurboTax? I did both federal and state taxes with it this year and it was pretty easy. Though I still haven't received my state tax return yet and I filed in the middle of March (they say 10 weeks normally). I know a gov't computer was stolen in Ohio and the state people are going nuts over it, but I want my money!!! I could be earning interest!!!

Speaking of interest. It's better to owe the state/city/country a little money at the end of the year than getting a tax return, more interest for you.

Argh, how annoying!

I always use a program too online..they are really easy..If I can do them, a monkey could. (anything to do with numbers, I might as well be 5 years old)

that's the joy of city taxes though, there are different agencies for different cities (at least in our area) and those are all done differently, so no computer program
I turbo taxed my fed and state but had to grit my teeth thru the city.... luckily I have everything taken out perfectly so I never owe, but i do still have to file and complete the paperwork, which is a mind-bender

and Lemur, you might want to check into that, your check might have gotten lost
I did direct deposit in Ohio and got my refund in less than 2 weeks

Wow, no kidding? I actually called them not too long ago to ask and this really rude guy yelled at me saying they're "not up to there yet". I guess I can try calling again.

Definitely call again. It never take more than 3 weeks from the date we filed our returns for IRS to direct deposit refund into the account. We use Turbo Tax but I may use a tax professional next year. Since we do not have kid/car/boat/home equity loan/medical bill, the only things we can use are mortgage interests & charity donations. We've paid, in the thousands, for 3 years in the row now. Ouch!!!

Ugh! I'm utterly disgusted right now. I called the tax department like 3 weeks ago asking why I haven't received my tax return yet. They lady said some garbage about not being able to give me my full tax return because I wasn't a resident for the entire year, and that I would get only about half. She said I'd get this "partial refund" in a week or two, and even after 3 it's no where in sight... something is seriously fishy here...

My advice would be to see if your city taxes are available to do online via Turbo Tax. The first two years that I filed city taxes (GR, Michigan) I had the same problem, only the first year I owed over $200! Then I started to use Turbo Tax for my city taxes as well, and I haven't had a problem since!
