Hi I am new to the board.

My wife and I have 3 cats. 2 yellow shorthairs and one calico breed female.

All of our Cats are aging between 8 and 11 years old.

When she ask what is the best cat I always tell her males make the best pets. She disagrees of course.

I like the shorthair breeds but she says the fluffy ones are the best "lappers".

Some opinions would be appreciated.

You know, this is all about personal opinion. My preference is short haired males, but don't tell that to my Scarlett, my petite long haired female. My 2 cudliest cats are both long haired.

I don't think you can generalize. For me, the "best" pet is the one you bond with. I didn't choose any of my cats based on sex or color. It's just the way that thing worked out and, to me, they are the best. I have three females, black, tuxedo and white and one male, gray and white, all short hair, but I love kitties of all colors, long haired or short.

Well mine are brother and sister. The male is short haired and the most affectionate of the two and the female is a fluff bucket! She is timid and shy but is friendly when she knows you. The male is a lap cat and definately the most cuddly. I love em both, they both have super personalities.

Surrounded by animals !
I have always been a fan of long haired kitties, but having said that I only own 2 !
4 short haired and 2 long haired...as eilcon said...we love them for * them* and regardless of hair length, or color, or sex, or nature, they all have quirky ways that are unique to their own individual personalitys. I like males and females equally, I like that they are different in their own ways, boys being boys, and girls being girls hehe

I think cats pick you, but I get along best with shorthair tabbies. Preferably former strays
I always thought I liked boys better but Zissou thinks I was silly, and her and I are two peas in a pod.

I think it depends much more on individual personality (both theirs and yours!) as to how much they bond with you.

Personally I have a preference for male pets, but there's no real basis for that other than I seem to bond better with male animals than females.

I prefer shorthairs, but for a very practical reason - mine and Nate's work schedules mean that it would be difficult to stick to a regular grooming schedule for a longhair, whereas with 2 shorthairs they get enough grooming from our hands when we pet them, so no extra time or effort is required.

Its individual preference

For me, I'd choose a male vs female any day - they are more loving, outgoing and all around accepting of things. Females tend to be more standoffish unless THEY choose to sit on your lap, etc.

And I prefer shorthair to longhair - I'm not into grooming. I owned one longhair - turkish angora. Placed him with a friend who really wanted him; he was going to be a show cat but didn't like showing. I got spoiled with cornish rexes (virtually no grooming
) and now own a mixed breed (shorthair) and an Ocicat. Both require little grooming

Females are great pets! I love the females more than the males and find them to be calmer, sweeter, and so forth. I also personally like almost no hair rather than long or short hair. Not the most popular opinion. I think all kitties are pretty though and just love cats in general.

It all depends on the individual, altered or not, conditions they were raised, personality, etc.
I don't think anyone can win this difference of opinions since it is just opinion.

There are too many differences between cats (even in the same litter) to make blanket statements such as all (or most) shorthair cats do not make good lap cats or male cats make the best pets.
