I'm not one of those fat owners with fat cats.. Im pretty thin myself actually

However today's visit to the vet confirmed that my boy (16 mths old) is a tad overweight - he is 6.3kg. Ideal is around 5kg for his breed i believe. He is just a domestic short hair (adopted as a stray).

He is neutured and is outdoor during the day and indoors at night.

I feed him dry food in the morning and a canned meat at night. I believe (well i know) he gets into the dog food during the day. This must stop (somehow).

I have tried chicken necks with him, he just plays with it for a bit but doesnt eat it. I've also tried small raw meat slabs which are packaged for cats. He used to eat a couple of those a week but went off that too. He also wont eat any canned fish anymore, only the meat varieties. Obviously he is not getting his protein and his carbs intake is too high. I've just been reading about the high carb make up of commercial dry foods.

The vet has suggested a prescription diet which I am going to take up. However its only dry food and its $30 per bag. They said they can also get meat of the same variety but is this worthwhile? I just dont know.

I want him to eat raw meat, I know this is best for him. But he just doesnt seem to want it.

I am fearful that he will keep putting on weight and get diabetes.. Im jumping to conclusions I know but he's only 16 months old and the last few months has constantly gained weight (he was 4.4kg in September last year).

I'm not a bad owner but I feel so guilty.. he isnt even obese like some other cats we've all seen but still... I need to make this better but I know its going to be a long slow process.

Any ideas/suggestions/advice here would be fantastic

My cat is overweight too and the vet prescribed Science Diet w/d for weight loss. It caused all kinds of problems and never actually helped her lose weight. After following the advice I received on this site, I'm now feeding high-end food (Wellness) wet only, 1/2 can in morning, 1/2 can at night. It's been working great and I hear they lose better on wet food alone. Good luck!

What brand of food are you feeding him now?

Roxie was overweight when I was feeding her Purina dry only. We then switched to a premium brand, Nutro, and she gets 1/2 can wet a day and 1/3 cup dry as well (She is a dry food junkie and loves to munch on it throughout the day). Since making the switch she has definately trimmed down. If your not using a premium brand maybe you should consider switching. I would also suggest increasing his wet food intake and lowering the amount of dry you give him. I use a little measuring cup to make sure Roxie is getting the same amount of dry each day. Hope this helps a little. Good luck!

I agree with the other posts, wet food (or raw) is the best way to go for weight loss/maintenance...and overall good health.

What type/brand/variety of prescription diet did the vet suggest?

Like you said, the dog food intake could have a significant effect on things.

You mentioned raw meat for your cat, but please do some research before you go that route. It isn't just an easy "throw them some raw meat" thing. You need to add Taurine and other essential ingredients to their diet along with the raw meat.

RAW is easy but only AFTER you have researched and discussed with a knowledgeable vet in nutrition ...

CANNED Is a great and far easier option for most...

Dry should be used sparingly

ANY of these should be discussed with the vet but research first and have IDEAS

Yep fully aware of the raw meat debate here - the only meat Ive ever given him are those special cat ones you can get in the meat section at the supermarket. He's only had it a couple of times.. they are kangaroo meat (I'm totally against this but I can't let my views get in the way of my cats eating habits).
I'm leaning more towards chicken wings/necks - how good are these? Should they be a regular part of his diet?

His regular diet is a small bowl of dry Whiskas or Friskies in the morning and a sachet or small bowl of canned Whiskas food at night. He wont eat the fish varieties so I always get the meat casserole types now.

Im not sure yet what brand of food the vet has ordered, I will be picking it up this week and will post here.

We dont have a large variety of pet food brands here like you do in the US.
Supermarkets only sell Whiskas, Friskies and Purina dry.
I was just at the pet shop and saw some high end brands for $60 per 3kg dry food! I'm all for top nutrition for my cat but thats out of my price range.

Aussies - any ideas where to get some well priced premium food?

I tried him with canned food this morning instead of dry - he hardly touched it. He loves his morning dry food so Im going to have to work something out there, I just hope he likes the prescription stuff.

I really need to work something out, I'm getting rather stressed about this.
