I was talking to mum today and she reckons that 4 tornadoes struck NZ recently, thats extremely odd, I've never heard of a tornado in NZ, but heck yeah I would have loved to have been there for that.

From what I understand, most buildings there are build with typhoons in mind, so your friend is probably fine. It may just be a few days before she can get back in touch with you.

The last typhoon I experienced in 2002 was a trip! It was a super typhoon with sustained winds of 190 mph! Scary, but a rush. We made it through with only water damage in the house (from water blowing in the air conditioners). But, not something I would want to experience again. We didn't have water for 2 weeks, and no power for almost a month. I'm happy to be back in the mountains of US!
They live in base housing. Form the pictures I've seen they look pretty well built. More like small apartment complexeswith maybe 4 houses per unit. They live in a bottom one. They looked concrete from the siding to me. I don't remember seeing shutters. I know she can see the water from her front door, but is up hill a bit.

It's pretty standard for all the houses to have shutters on them for typhoon season.
If they live on base, it should be well built, so should be ok.

Its still lingering in Okinawa.

Wind speed: 45Mph
Travel speed: 25Kph

Now they're saying it won't be near me until 0600 tomorrow (Sunday 15th)

I would pick a typhoon over a tornado any day! At least with a typhoon you have some warning and can prepare. A tornado comes out of nowhere. No thank you!

Have fun

First time I went on a plane we flew though a typhoon on landing in Japan. Next morning things were a little calmer but still pretty windy, then we got grounded in Chicago from 9/11.

I should have thought of this earlier, but I got a good update on the conditions in my friend's area by checking out the base's website!
Now I know! I'm bookmarking it for future reference too!

Well I think it has gone
I woke up at 0420 so went outside for a smoke and its just so calm, warm, no wind and the birds are chirping, we only got the edge of it yesterday. It was meant to be here at 0600.

I actually remembered while I was having my smoke, that I missed on just by a week several years ago when I came here for a holiday. I did some landscaping in a city near Tokyo, got a call a week after I got back to NZ, saying that a typhoon struck and somebody's garage ended up it the property I had landscaped and the place was pretty messed up.

Oh well its typhoon season til September, so maybe I will get to see one.
I just don't wanna wait
I'm too impatient.
