My friend's 15 year old cat has an ingrown nail. The nail is curved and grew into the paw. Is this something I can take care of myself or is a vet needed. The claw is not ingrown to far and I should be able to cut it then pull it out. Any recommendations or tips?

I would have a vet look at it to be on the safe side. I'm guessing its the higher one? The thumb? That's usually the one that gets ingrown cause people forget to clip it. How often does your friend clip the cat's nails not to have noticed it till now?

It is the thumb. I usually go over to her house an clip the cats nails. The problem was I did not come by for 3 months. She said that she cut the nails but obviously missed that one. It looks like a simple procedure that I could do but wanted to get some other input.

Have a vet or groomer check it ... groomer would be my first choice

It is not infected yet. The nail is barely ingrown and I feel confident about doing it. From reading on line it seems that the biggest concern is infection. Any other thoughts. Thanks.

Can you see the quick? That would be my biggest concern--if the quick has grown down the nail, then you may have difficulty cutting the nail back without cutting the quick.
