Hi there!

My cat, who is 13 years old, got a hold of a pair of my Mom's earplugs on a string on Tuesday night. (it's Friday) They were on a string and were a soft plastic like kind. She ate both of them ( but not the string) . My Mom and I decided to wait a few days to see if she passed them...

This morning, at about 4:30, we heard her throwing up, we went to go & see and she was throwing up this clear foam, she did this about 8 times. She kept making faces and you could actually hear the earplug in her throat. I ( who is very dramatic) called the emergency vet and brought her in. The vet kept talking about the prices of the surgery, etc. He told us we should bring her to her regular vet. We brought her home and at 9am called her ''regular'' vet who said we couldn't bring her in as she was only fixed there and did not come for regular visits.

We finally found someone who would see her and agreed that she needed surgery. Just as the taxi came into my driveway, my cat went into the litterbox. To our surprise, the cat pooed one out! It must of been the big bowl of milk I gave her. So we cancelled the taxi and appointment in hopes that the next ear plug will come out. What am I going to do? Im afraid of it blocking her intestines. Ive been giving her hairbell remedy in hopes that it will help. Is there anything else I can do? What if the earplug re-appears in her throat? How can I take it out? PLEASE HELP.

Thank you so so much, to whoever replies!!

My advice is: call the taxi back and get to the Vet.

Hello and welcome to the site - I am sorry you join us with such a problem

I've read other posts about people cats eating all sorts of things and it is a worry.

The coughing and foaming might have been a hairball she was trying to get rid of. When cats cough it can sound pretty nasty to listen to

How is your cat now - do you see any signs of distress - if so then you do need to see the vet.

But it sounds like the plug will pass just like the first one - I am assuming it was one of those soft foam like plugs - but of course no-one can guarantee that and I would suggest that if nothing happens within the next day you do need to see the vet. Cats are predators and when they eat a mouse or such like they will rip and tear at it, this helps to make it smaller and easier to digest, so things like ear-plugs could cause problems.

Lots of good popping {{{{{ vibes }}}}} for your kitty

Keep us posted

I agree with Blaise. You were lucky with the first earplug but I don't think you will be so lucky with the other one. Cat intestinal systems and their mouths are very tricky. If that earplug had even a little bit of string still on it, it could get stuck on the barbs in the back of the throat.

I am not trying to scare you. I just think you need to respond to the symptoms your cat is showing you. If she is still gagging, you need to follow up.

If she does not seem to be in distress right now, if it were my cat, I would take her to the vet and at the very least I would get an x-ray to find out where the heck the second plug is. Also the vet would be able to discern if it were still in her throat.

The cost of the x-ray will not kill you. It sounds like you need a regular vet and this could be a good time to start that relationship. Bless you for caring so much and going with emergency.

I agree that you should go ahead and go to the vet. A good vet should be able to use X-rays and feeling around to determine the location of that second ear plug, and if its in a dangerous location or not. With any luck, he/she will say that it should pass fine, but its better to know that to just hope that it will.

I do believe that a vet should be able to say whether or not surgery is necessary, which we all hope it isn't!
But yes, hairball remedy, and even catnip for fiber, would be good to help it pass if it will.

How is she eating and drinking now? Any more vomiting? If she's eating, drinking, and going to the litterbox okay right now, things might pass normally. But the vomiting from earlier makes me think that she might have some trouble with that second plug. A vet trip really is best.

Thanks all. No at the moment she is perfectly fine. It's when the earplug resurfaces to her throat is what I am fearful of. Maybe feeding her a little wet food every few hours will help it digest?? THANKS*

You might give her some of that paste for hairballs... It's in a tube we got from the vet - you give about an inch long squeeze of it and it's a mild laxative.

Your kitty must love the smell of your mom! Our daughter's cat loves to chew on things that have been in close contact with my husband - his ear buds (she might have eaten one - we don't know for sure, it just disappeared and she was fine), his electric razor (slit his throat a little bit), and she pulled a key off of his laptop. He has to put things in drawers now.

I hope your kitty will be O.K. and am sending good thoughts for her.
