I don't know if any of you have tried this, but we live in a small town and the local pet store carried the usual "stuff". I asked her if it was possible to order in Merrick's for me by the case and she did. Now she stocks it on her shelf and other patrons of the store are now buying it which is a good thing. I had difficulty earlier this week trying to find Orijen (recommended by Sharky to try to help slim down my fat boy Bijou) and my little pet store is the one where I found it. I spoke to them and asked if this was going to be permanently stocked and they said yes.

If you have a particular pet store where you shop for most of your pet's needs, they will often help you out by ordering in things for you and they learn about better foods in the process. It can't hurt and if they are willing it can save a lot of running around trying to find specific foods for your kits.

I'm going through PetFoodDirect and looking at options for food. I think if I were to switch from Nutro, I would have to go with something still in that price range, and I'm finding a list of stuff I will post later. But PFD doesn't list Serengetti...
So I will have to keep looking around the web. As far as what Yosemite just suggested... as I've already said, we have no small petstores around here. But, the manager at PetCo is extremely nice and helpful and I can imagine that he may order some for me. I'll ask him about Serengetti for dry and I'm still looking a good-priced, high-quality wet. Looking at 80 cents or less for a 5.5 oz can, good quality... And littleraven: I'll see if I can try and contact the company, but do I need to get a link to the Serengetti? Or how should I get in contact with them? First I'll check with my PetCo and see if they will order for me.

I buy directly from the makers (sharky posted the link). You have to spend 20.00 to order. Which comes down to TWO 4lb bags of food. And that is with free shipping. When I ordered mine I got it within 5 days.

Jennifer, that's an insane situation, because what I'm witnessing here in Europe (I get loads of email newsletters from European online suppliers) is that the demand for Orijen is skyrocketing, although I haven't seen a single advertisement for it in the print media. I wouldn't have been aware of the product if icklemiss/Eithne hadn't have recommended it, and all of a sudden I find myself ordering it for >10 people here.

KuntryKitty, if you want to try Serengetti, email the company and ask them for a sample. I just got one from them in the mail yesterday. That way, you can at least know if you're cats will eat it before shelling out for a bigger bag. Also, if you're thinking of ordering from PetFoodDirect, google for discounts first. I think there's one active now for 22% off, which more than pays for the shipping.

Thanks Misty! I think what I'll do is try and write the company for a sample, maybe. But Zoey does excellent on her Nutro... we'll see. Today I bought two 12-packs of Meow Mix: the variety, 3 kinds, all non-fish. They were $4.59 a case, plus they were on sale (forgot the sale price), and I had a $1.00 coupon. It averaged out to $0.34 per tub!

I'd try to find California Natural locally if you can. Surprisingly many places do carry it, like PetsPlus and smaller pet stores (not chains).

The simplicity of California Natural to me is better than Orijen, and I have had great results with it. Chicken & Rice formula, not the other one.
By 'the other one' do you mean the Herring & Sweet Potato? Did you have a problem with it?

I replied to the thread you started on it, but personally I do find Orijen better than EVO (and the other high protein brands)

They had told me the same thing when I originally asked them about suppliers in the US.

Many of the stores will not stock it because it doesn't have the USDA seal of approval (as useless as we have found that to be in the case of pet foods) and unless they can get one of the bigger 'brand' stores interested they have problems getting foods supplied in the US from up here.

Personally I found it worked from contacting them on both ends, I contacted my local stores to get them interested (because it is not a big company where they stock other foods from the same company where they don't mind ordering some extra to try) and emailing Orijen to ask them to look into supplying the area.

Ah, the joys of our "free-trade" agreement. It often seems as though it's only free-trade as long as the US can send product into Canada but not the other way around.

Yep, Herring & Sweet potato. I didn't have any problems per say, just my kittys had started to hack up hairballs daily. I then closely looked at Omega 6 and 3s in the formula and they were very off from their Chicken & Rice formula (no hairball problems with this one).

If your cat would eat it, you could afford it, and you were willing to order, what food would you get? What is the best food, nutrition wise, available? This is with the exception of raw and home-made formulas. YOu may list what, in your opinion, is the best for dry and wet.
I'm pretty much happy with my dry selections, we have california naturals, nutro complete care indoor & orijen.. i would like to try the chicken & rice felidae at some point.

wet food, well round here it sucks.. they only eat cuts n gravy so i am using proplan and the odd whiskas and fancy feast, before recalls we used nutro & max pouches which i felt were ok.

their are probably better wet foods but this group has turned the majority down already.

I'd order Serengetti directly from timberwolforganics. They don't charge shipping provided that you spend at least $15 (which ends up being $20.. for two bags, because they're $10 a bag).

Mine won't eat anything but the Evo (and the ones on raw eat raw of course).. but.. nope to Pinnacle, Serengetti, and Core. All 20 paws down.

I am already feeding my furkids the foods I like the best. It helps (greatly) that my local Pet Barn gives me a nice discount for buying so much.

So, for dry they get a half a cup of 50/50 Innova Evo/Nature's Variety Raw Instinct every evening before bed. For wet, they get: the Solid Gold "Turkey/Chicken/Whitefish" Gourmet blend, Innova Evo, the 3 non-grain, non-fish Wellness flavors, 3 non-fish Merrick flavors, all 5 non-fish Natural Balance flavors, and all 6 of the Nature's Variety flavors......one can in the am, one in the pm, rotating through all 19 flavors.

I eat Mac & Cheese while my furfaces eat steak and caviar. *sigh*
