Obviously, this is typically a question for our nutritionist expert, sharky.

If your cat would eat it, you could afford it, and you were willing to order, what food would you get? What is the best food, nutrition wise, available? This is with the exception of raw and home-made formulas. YOu may list what, in your opinion, is the best for dry and wet.

Sharky: hehe, I wish...
I do get paid $6 an hour to work on the ranch, so I have plenty of money. But I'm saving for car payments, college, gas money, insurance, etc. Zoey is extremely healthy so I see no need to change from her usual, which I see as fairly decent. It's called Origen? I feed Nutro for wet, among other things; can't wait till the real stuff gets on the shelves. Plus I think our PetCo will be getting California Natural in soon, which will be good.

Cal natural at petco would be awesome ...

I likely spelled it wrong
origen

LOL.. I too due to $$ feed what works for me and for my Zoey she eats Nutro and whatever wet and raw I can get her too... lmao... my dog eats half raw half homemade
...You want to here $$$... her raw is 20-25a month ... her supplements are about 25 a month ... accupuncture is 70-140 a month .... then there is another 40 or so for the homemade part and she is only 15lbs... but she is improving

Thanks for the link! I'll look into it!
Sharky: wow! It's great that you take such extreme measures to care for your friends, though, it's comforting to know there are people out there who truly love their pets. Like people on TCS!
Yeah, my Zoey does really well on her Nutro, and is in extremely good health. As you know, she alternates with the wet. My dog, Tucker, eats a high-quality dog food called Exceed; all of our dogs do well on it.

Sharky, I was getting curious... you say raw. I'm not comfortable feeding that as meals, but as an addition to a meal occasionally, I think it would be nice. We raise our own beef and get it butchered, so there are no chemicals or preservatives or anything at all in it; just pure beef. Is this good to feed Zoey?

If I could afford it, my choice would be Orijen dry as a snack and By Nature Organics canned as regular meals.

Well my cats will eat anything (almost) and while I probably can't afford it I do spend a lot on their food - there's nothing I refuse to buy for them based on price. I'll go without myself so that they can have the best. The only concession is that there are a couple of foods I would feed more often if they were a bit cheaper (eg applaws) but they do still get them. I got some orijen dry food from zooplus with my last order and it's going down well with Mosi. He only has a small amount of dry though so I'm not too fussed about what he has so long as it's a good quality dry. But I'm glad he likes the orijen.

Thanks! That's what I wanted to say, but couldn't figure out how to say it.

Honestly I would keep mine on what he is currently on. He gets TimberWolf Organics Serengeti http://timberwolforganics.com/s.nl/i...&category=-102

You have to spend 20.00 or more to order directly from them and shipping is free. You can get 2 4lbs bags for just over 20.00 with free shipping. I buy the big 16.5lb bag for 33.00 and take out 3 or so cups and vacuum seal the bag back up. Ping loves it and does great on it.

Also I like Eagle Pack wet.

Where is the best place to order all of these high-quality foods with low prices and preferrably free shipping? I'd like to try some California Natural and Orijen perhaps...

I'm still not sure I can get Orijen here... it may be at a store some distance away, but I was looking into shipping it... honestly, though, mine love Innova Evo, and the several bags of other high protein no grains foods I bought them.. have been pretty much untouched.

If you're looking at wanting to go with a high protein, no grain diet in dry.. and want cost effective, I'd see about the serengetti. I saw that someone posted the link above, and they do have free shipping as well. On petfooddirect.com they have a number of the foods, although I didn't see orijen (which, if I remember correctly, orijen, evo, and CORE were all about the same price, and I'm currently paying close to $40 for a 15 pound bag of Evo..).. the foods do tend to be a couple of dollars less, I think, on petfooddirect, but then they do charge shipping, so it may end up being much like the price you would pay in a store. Serengetti was *much* cheaper, but the contents still looked pretty good to me... Sharky is a better source of product knowledge. I think price wise, you're going to want to go with Serengeti. It was the lowest costwise, and the Core and Evo are really expensive. The nice thing about it is, mine, at least, tend to eat less of it, but four cats here eating it regularly go through a small bag a week.. around a five pound bag?? $20 a week for mine.

I feed raw, and Evo, so.. I don't really have a preference for wet... and when I try to feed something I *think* is good for them, I get disdainful glances. *They* like Meow Mix wet and Sheba wet. That's what I use to mix into their raw.

Orijen is in Canada. So yes its expensive even to order online.
I'd try to find California Natural locally if you can. Surprisingly many places do carry it, like PetsPlus and smaller pet stores (not chains).

The simplicity of California Natural to me is better than Orijen, and I have had great results with it. Chicken & Rice formula, not the other one.

I've looked into all these foods from time to time... but what's the best for a senior cat? For now I'm sticking with Solid Gold because he'll eat it where he's been ignoring dry for awhile (he just didn't take in enough calories on wet alone, it's amazing the difference a small handful of dry a day is making). But with how he's been, I'd be shocked if he liked it for more than a few months.

WOW! $40 for a 15 lb bag! That is waaaay out of my price range! Like I said, I could afford it if I was desperate, but I have to save for lots of other stuff (car, gas, college, insurance). I've looked at the Serengetti just a minute ago, and it looks great! I'll have to go on a website and see where I can find it and look at prices. Nutro is great for the price, IMO, but I'm not reluctant to switch to an even higher quality, so long as it's not outrageously expensive. i think as far as wet goes, I'll stick with what I have now, because I have some decent to really good wet around here. And we don't have any petstores, hardly. One little aquatics store, a tiny little one that only does stuff like lizards, hamsters, and rats, and then we have our PetCo and Wal-Mart, and either of the latter carry the really top-end stuff. I'll talk to our PetCo manager and see if they are interested in ordering something like California Natural wet. I'll see what I can find online for Serengetti. Thanks everybody!

If you want to try some of those foods you should email the companies for samples. I had the guys try Wellness Core, Pinnacle, Evo, and Serengeti. Only Raven liked Serengeti. The other 2 are perfectly happy with Nutro. In fact Stimpy wouldn't even put his mouth around those other kibbles.
He liked Evo for a while when I used it as a treat, but then stopped liking it.
After our Wellness Indoor failure, I was very hesitant to buy expensive bags of kibble.

Needless to say, we are staying with Nutro kibble.
