OK I am so dense, are you talking about the one day thing? Or permanent ban?

I thought you were all talking about a permanent ban.

The US is more by jurisdictions - for example, here in Colorado, it started out in some of the municipalities and then the state decided to make it statewide, but for some reason decided that the casinos should be exempt
(along with "cigar bars"). But now casinos are supposed to ban smoking starting in Jan 2008. Of course they want their exemption back.

I love the smoking ban we have here....it's made going out so much more pleasant! I'm glad the UK is stepping in the same direction. I don't care if other people smoke, but I don't wanna!

There is (unfortunately) no Federal indoor smoking ban, but several municipalities and some states, I believe, have instituted them. Chicago has one, but the vast majority of Illinois does not. As of right now, bars can still allow smoking in certain parts of the bar, but have to have no smoking areas. On January 1, 2008, bars have to be 100% smoke free.

I live in Pennsyvania, city philadelphia, suburbs for me.
Phila. has a total smoking ban which I love. It is great to go in to a restaurant or bar, and not smell the smoke. ( I do smoke on occasion, and this helps me to cut down on my bumming of smokes). But in the suburb where I live, there is not a ban, and now the smoke is really annoying, because I go into the city mostly and when I go out here, it really STINKS! The state is debating whether to have a staetwide ban, as in New York, but the casinos and some bars object. Some bars, that are mostly sports bars, want to not be banned from smoking because they think it will cut into their business. Some bars in Phila. are still allowing smoking, but you have to pay $5 for use of an ashtray to pay for the fine in case they get caught.
There are some bars called CIGAR BARS. They can't very well be banned from smoking, but I think they are. The whole thing about them is you can smoke. Don't know what they are going to do.
Apparently in New York, the ban has not affected business and things are going well. The other states are just resisiting the change. I was opposed at first, but now I welcome it. If I were a full time, pack a day smoker, I might object. It is not bad though, becauswe now to smoke, you stand out front of the building, and that is very social to be out with a lot of people, sucking on a smoke.

so, is it a 'no smoking in public places' ban? boy, that'd make things very different from what they were the last time i was in the UK!

July 2nd also is the "Great American Smoke Out" day. It's a day to encourage people not to smoke for the entire day to try to kick start them to quit for good. That's why I was asking if you all meant a permanent ban or just for the day.

Epona has put her finger on one bad thing about the ban which is that women are on occasion having to leave their drinks unattended whilst going outside to smoke can leave them vulnerable to attack. I'm concerned that the ban encourages drinking at home, which also means more smoking around young children

I gave up three weeks ago and its going well

there have been attempts to ban smoking here at home, along with firing people from there jobs etc, All of which are very wrong.

the first couple of days, of not smoking is the hard part,
after that i was fine. lol sometimes you will still hit those tiggers that say smoke, keep some gum or hard candy near, it may help.

In my own world, its much nicer there
New Zealand has had a ban in place sine late 04' its good to see others taking the same step. I had finally quit for all of a month, then came here for a brief holiday. I started smoking again because you can smoke everywhere oh and they are soooo much cheaper than NZ. I'm not sure about the UK or other places but we can even smoke inside department stores. I hope that Japan will ban it as well. Although I am trying to quit again its not easy when its everywhere.

There has been a smoking ban in Scotland for a few years now, works great. The reasoning for it (I think it's the same one for England) is basically a health and safety in work places one.

So it's not forbidden to smoke in all public places, it's forbidden to smoke in places with atleast three walls and a roof where people work. With the thinking that no one should be forced to spend their days in a dangerous second hand smoke environment. Yeah you could say people could quit their jobs to get out of it but a lot of people can't.

My friend is a barman and he always got bad coughs all the time and now since the smoking ban has been in effect for a good while that has pretty much stopped.
