I am so proud of you for all you are doing
Have you seen the psychiatrist yet? I know you were kind of anxious about that one.

Oh I wish you'd gone... but will your therapist at least coordinate with your regular doctor on what should be prescribed? I really hope it's not just sleep meds, but something that will help you cope in general.

It's so good to see you making progress! It's clear in your posts... you're getting stronger.

Hey April...I think it is very worth it to talk to someone though..because oftentimes there is an underlying reason for lack of sleep that sleeping pills will not solve.

I also want to comment real quick about the perception of therapy. I've been in therapy myself and what I choose to believe is that therapy is exercise for the emotions. Some people get that through friends, but many, many people need someone who can assist them to talk through what is going on. Please do not stop therapy because you are concerned how others will perceive you....in the end, it is a kind thing to care enough about yourself to seek asistance.

Feel free to PM me offline if you have any questions.

April, are you taking an antidepressant at all? I was just curious, because I was having some real issues a few years ago. I couldn't sleep, I had to leave work to go to my car to cry - it was just BAD. I actually looked up whether kids had a problem if their parents committed suicide. That was really the only thing that really kept me together was the thought of my kids. I did go to my doctor and I did get an antidepressant that seemed to help a LOT - almost right away.

Not that I think drugs are always the answer, but my sleeping problem was the depression, and that treated, I slept a lot better...

Hugs, April.

April...Yup...If they are worth going to, they sure do know how to push the right ("feels" like wrong) buttons, don`t they?
When I went for counseling for childhood sexual abuse, I had the feelings of not want to talk about that too....but I made up my mind before i went that I WAS GOING TO TALK & LET HIM ASK THE QUESTIONS.....if for no other reason than I wanted to get my $$$$$ worth! LOL (I`m frugal with a buck, trust me!)
In the long run I was glad, because sorting through my "stuff" , while very difficult at the time, is WELL WORTH IT later. I learned soooo much about myself that I never understood...and I like me , so much more now. I finally feel at home in my own self, and have also a better understanding of other people. I don`t "judge" nearly so quickly...cause you just never know the other persons life story.
I hope you continue to go to counseling, to listern and honestly think through and answer the questions and really ponder your life issues and talk AND FEEL them through.....In the end you will certainly sleep better...and that no-sleeping is CRAZY MAKING...trust me...I KNOW!
God bless you...I`m praying for you!
Feel free to PM me if you like.....I can "hear" whatever you have to say. (After working with quite a few women in small group settings I don`t think I could be surprised by anything anyone would tell me.)

Had to repost that because it's such a major piece of wisdom! If everybody on earth could just learn that single principle, what wonderful world it would be!

One other thing that I have seen personally, is that my son, who was on antidepressants, and it therapy - for a whole year! - was having trouble sleeping and the regular doctor said Benedryl would help with that...

How do you know if the person you are going to is helping? And how long should it take before you notice that it is?

I dont know but went yesterday and walked away thinking I paid for this? The first thing she does is ask "whats new". Then we talked about the weather. Yup its gonna rain.

I dont know maybe im expecting too much. All I know is that I want to feel something. Somedays I feel like im going through the day and dont even feel like im there doing it. Kind of wierd.

I went with not knowing about going back to work and we havent even touched on that yet and I start Monday eeek!!!

April...therapy isn't something that should be time bound. Sometimes it takes a while to find the right mix for you...therapy alone, therapy and medicine...so don't rush it. On the other hand, if you aren't feeling helped, perhaps you do need to look into someone else. There are many styles of therapy and you should find one that works for you. Not necessarily one that you find yourself feeling better right away (that didn't happen for me either) but one where you feel comfortable that the therapist is getting to the root of your issue with you. Also, it's important to remember that therapy only works if you are fully committed to it. A therapist is only another human being and cannot magically know what is going on so you have to be willing to share things that bother you etc. in order to get the most out of it.

I definately agree on this. I work with therapists all day & people that come in with struggles just like you. You have to WANT to be helped, and its not going to cure your problems overnight-- have you brought up your issues with your therapist? About work? When she asks you 'whats new'- do you mention work at all?

If you honestly don't believe that this therapist cant help you, tell her your problems with her methods, and see if maybe she knows another therapist that can help you.

Good luck!

april, something that I've found helpful in my therapy is to write out a list of what specifically has been bothering me since our last session -- if I don't, I tend to forget stuff, even sometimes the really important stuff (and some of that may be that I'm avoiding dealing w/the issue, which is what I'm paying for anyhow) so having a list to remind me sometimes help steer us in the right direction.

That said, it does often take a little time when you're deep in depression to feel like anything is getting better -- I know I was on meds for almost a month before I noticed a change in my outlook, though others were telling me they saw a change sooner.

Well, it doesn't need to be anything so structured as a workbook, if you're not comfortable (or if you're strapped for $$$ - my therapist has a lending library for her pt's) -- just a plain paper list to jog your memory, in case you have another "What's new" session, you could look at the list and say, "Ya know, xxx has been bothering me lately. . ." I agree that a workbook could be helpful, when you're ready for it. That's always been the hardest for me, at least, is working on my therapy outside of sessions, but when I do, it helps A TON.
