We have 2 cats - brother and sister - age 4. Charlie, the male, had a mild urinary tract infection and was taken to the vet and given medication. On his return, Emma hisssed at poor Charlie. We have had to separate the two and are trying to get them back together on friendly terms. They have always been close. We attempted to see what would happen if they could meet. They hissed terribly at each other and Charlie attacked and chased Emma. How can we get these two back together?

Thank you ---- heart sick over this.

This is a common problem and nothing to stress over. What happened is that while Charlie was at the Vet he was close enough to other animals that your cat Emma can now smell those unfamiliar animals/scents on Charlie. They will work it out in just a day or two though, so don't worry unless the fights escalate beyond hissing and chasing.

There are 2 things to try. Rub them both with the same towel and leave it for them to sniff. Put a dab of vanila on the back of their necks so that they smell the same.

This often happens after a vet visit. They smell different and are considered a stranger for a while. It should get better in a day or so.

I've had the same problem many times. I recommend a Feliway diffuser, which works great in my house. I've also had success feeding them together. I have a large wire crate I put one of them in and then feed them within view of each other, gradually moving them closer until they don't hiss or react negatively. If they do, move back and start again. Food is a great motivator; it allows them to associate happiness (food) with the other cat. You can also brush each of them and let the other sniff the hair.

It can take awhile (maybe a week or more, depending on the cats) to get them reacquainted. I know how frustrating it is, but be patient and don't rush it, and things will work out.
