Sebastian Concerns

Seb will not come out from under the bed. I can see him back under there, he is sometimes awake and sometimes sleeping. Daphne goes there, tries to play and he just watches her ... doesn't smack her or respond other than with his eyes.

I placed his wet food near the edge of the bed .. no go, not interested. I KNOW something is wrong when he will not eat! I talk to him, make all the cutey sweet noises he usually responds to but he won't. He just looks at me. I cannot get under there to get him and don't want to upset him.

I am not sure about his litter habits lately. I haven't seen anything out of the ordinary. He did eat yesterday.

I called our regular vet, surprisingly there was someone there doing paperwork or something. She said to bring him in first thing tomorrow. The emergency clinic here requires money up front to treat. I just do not have it. Nor do I have a credit card to charge it on. I am hoping to work out a payment plan with the regular vet tomorrow.

Any idea what could be wrong with him? I am worried sick and hope it is okay to wait another 24 hours.

Please send vibes for him.

You're right, that doesn't sound good at all. I'm ending lots of "healthy" vibes his way.

Oh no poor Seb...no wonder you are worried, I can't imagine what it is, but maybe he just is having one of those days like us humans have...please let us know what the vet says tomorrow!!

I definitely will. I hope to get a decent job soon so I will be able to have a fund just for the cats. I hate having money be an issue. Feel like a bad cat parent when I can't just do what should be done right now.

He finally moved up onto the bed. I talked to him gently and petted him all over - nothing seems to be painful. I checked his teeth and gums. They look okay. I tried to pick him up and he was not having any of it. Yelled like he was having his temp taken. Once I had him in my arms he was okay, but wanted down immediately. Now he is lying on the bed, sleeping again.

He still won't touch his food. But when I made a ham sandwich for lunch I decided to see if he would want a bite of that. He loved it so I gave him a tiny bit more.

I am wondering if it could be arthritis? He had a bone spur removed from his hip a couple of years ago. The vet then (not my current one) said he could have issues with it later on.

Sometimes he will ask for help getting up to higher places if the furniture isn't arranged just so. If it is arthritis, I can deal with that. If it is something more serious, that's when I begin to stress.

Sorry to be such a worry wart! You all must get tired of me.

No one gets tired of you- don't worry. You're jsut being a good meowmy to Seb. I understand how worried you must be.

I hope Seb feels better today and that he gets a good report at the vet tomorrow. Positive thoughts and healthy vibes to him. Hugs to both of you.

Thanks guys

Seb is 11, going on 12 and weighs about 14 lbs.

He moved around a bit more. I watched him as he tried to decide to get up to his bed. Took him a good minute before he placed his paws on top then slowly jumped up. I have tested his joints, rubbed every place I can think to rub, his belly, checked paws. Am I missing anything?

To me, it seems like moving isn't any fun. He doesn't cry out but then he rarely ever does. No limping like he did with the bone spur. When he moves, it looks like me first thing in the morning ... slowly. Daphne jumps on him trying to play and he just sighs and takes it.

I took a short nap earlier and he was off the bed when I woke up. Not sure if he has eaten or drank anything more.

Do you think maybe he is lethargic? Have you taken his temp...do his gums look pale or pink?

I don't have a way to take his temp here at home His gums look good.

I just watched him slink into the kitchen where he ate some kibble. As he was slinking away, he turned and hissed at me then scooted away as though I had hurt him. It must be something to do with his hindquarters? The look he gave me was so sad

Ohhh Bonnie he loves you he just doesn't feel good...hmm could he have hurt himself somehow, I'm sorry if I'm asking stupid questions but I'm just trying to think what could be wrong with him....poor baby...What time is your appt tomorrow. At least he ate that's good!!
Is it too warm where you are? Maybe that's why he doesn't have much of an appetite, I know sometimes cats don't eat as much in the summertime, if it's just too hot for them. Just a thought. Sebastian will be in my thoughts and prayers.

That is excellent advise!

Continued vibes for your baby boy.

We once had a cat who ended up with a puncture wound on his rump (he was an indoor/outdoor cat who apparently got into a tussle with another critter). He would hiss and swat at us if we touched the lower half of his body. We thought he had been hit by a car or something until the vet found the puncture wound. Hopefully whatever is going on with Sebastian is simple and easy to fix.

Oh Bonnie this is sad and troubling news! I think he will be ok.

My thoughts are the same as another poster. The majority of the time when one of my cats ( I have 7) acts that way if I take their temperature it is high. about 6 months ago, I had something run through the house. Three of the kitties spiked temps of 105.5 and quite eating and hid.

This only lasted for 24 hours though. I don't know if someone got a mouse in the house and those who ate it got sick. Or if it was a virus I brought in on my shoes.

It is very late now, but I will be sending lots of get well quick vibes to big sweet Sebastion. Poor Daphne has to be upset too that her big guy isn't feeling well.

Lots of hugs all the way around!

Thinking about Seb

Just came in from the vet.

When I went to bed last night, I found a huge pee spot where Seb had been lying yesterday. He rarely ever misses the box, so I know he had to be feeling lousy.

When at the vet, I was explaining his history of bone spur, etc and petting Seb. When I touched one spot on his spine he went kitty blender on me. My hand is a bit thrashed but at least we know his spine was tender Seems like he probably twisted it while acting like a kitten with Daphne.

The vet wasn't sure about a UTI. He gave me antibiotics and anti-inflammatories for his back. Wants to see him again in 4 or so days to see how he is feeling.

I really need to find a way to make climbing and getting down easier for him. I could take some of my storage boxes and create a step system that way until I get shelving.

Not sure how to convince him he is really a 60+ year old guy and not a kid.

Thanks to all of you for your vibes and good thoughts. Those and the anti-inflammatories will help a lot.

On a side note, does Nature's Miracle work on mattresses?
Oh That's good news...Bless his heart I hope the anti-inflammatory works for him. Maybe he's trying to keep up with Daphne too much Good idea to make him some stairs. Not sure about Nature's miracle for a mattress...can't hurt to try it! I have been waiting for this news all morning so now I can go take a shower with a sigh of relief!!
I have been waiting to hear about Seb, too! Thank God he can get some kind of relief soon.

When will the vet know about a UTI? Because it very well could be that, too.

I will continue to keep you guys in my thoughts and prayers~

He didn't do any tests for UTI. Just the antibiotics and told me to keep an eye on him and see how he does. I will watch to see how his litter habits are and if he is avoiding the box. Vet seems to think it was his back but gave antibiotics just in case.

I was researching UTI on the internet. Looks like if I watch him closely I should be able to tell, right? Or should I have the vet run tests right now? Maybe this evening after the anti-inflammitory has done its work, I'll be able to tell more.

You are all so sweet! Sorry it took so long. Pacific time is too far behind you
post #26 of 37
While a UTI is nothing to mess around with, I don't think that's it from reading your description of Seb's behavior.

The huge pee stain would be unlikely. Massive volume is something that I pray for in a UTI prone cat...that's usually an indication that the plumbing is working. I think it's likely that he just did not want to get up. Precious did that when she had a virus a few weeks ago.

A decreased pee volume, increased trips to the box or attempts to pee, and general nervousness (carpet sniffing especially) would be the first signs. Later signs would be not using the box, dribbling, straining, possibly bloody urine, and frequent butt licking. Extremely bad signs are all of the above in addition to lethargy.

If he happens to do it again but on a smooth surface you can suck it up with a syringe and take it to the vet to be tested.

I hope Seb starts feeling better soon.

I hope he's feeling better soon. Making steps sounds like a very good idea. Even a small stepladder or two might help. There are fairly inexpensive metal and rubber ones with 2 or 3 steps at most DYI stores.

well, if it is a UTI, the anti-biotics will take care of it. if not, it probably won't hurt him to take them - regardless of how he tries to convince you it does hopefully either they or the anti-inflammatories will have some kind of effect

Bonnie, how is Seb feeling tonight?

Thanks for the info and the ideas.

This morning he is pretty much the same. He moved around a bit last night, but seems to just choose a place and park himself there.

He did crawl into bed with me last night, wanted to be very close to my face. So we fell asleep nose to nose.

I called the vet last night to ask when I should see improvement. He said within a couple of days - to give the anti-inflammitories time to work. Said that if he responds to this treatment but still seems stiff he wants to give him glucosamine for arthritis. Is this a standard treatment?

He is eating, haven't seen him drink or use the litter box. I'll hear him in the box but by the time I get there he is finished No more accidents, that I have found anyway.

He is very alert, though. Watches me and Daphne and responds to sounds around him. Right now he is lying in the middle of the floor grooming himself a bit. Oops, now stretched out on his side. It will be hot here the next few days so he won't be moving much anyway.

I hope the meds do their job! Will give him another dose of each before I head out to work. Maybe he'll be better when I get home. Thanks guys!
