Okay, so I admit.. my cat is overly affectionate. To the point of being obnoxious!
He always wants to lay on you, and he digs his claws into you. I don't mind it sometimes, but other times if I have had a bad day.. yeah, it gets annoying. So I was lying on the couch last night watching a movie, and he was lying beside me. He started clawing me, so I kind of gently pushed him away.. and he bit me!
Not enough to draw blood, but it did hurt pretty bad.. he bit me hard enough for it to swell up pretty bad! I didn't really know how to punish him, so I just kinda yelled at him. Did I do the right thing? Was I wrong to push him away? I feel really bad now..

I think he was just playing w/ you, but I don't think he realized that it hurt you. It's not a good idea to play with your kitty's paws too much; they might scratch & bite. But if you're not in the mood to play, pushing him away is the right thing to do. Scold him in a serious voice so that he knows not to do it next time.

Don't feel bad about pushing him away; he needed to be scolded! It's important he associates bad behaviour like biting with being ignored, and when he's well behaved that he gets affection. Harry was very scratch-happy at first but with plenty of loud 'ows' and claps of the hands he doesn't scratch at all anymore.
