HELP!!!!

I bought a kitten yesterday, the breeder stated that he was upset because his brither and sisters had left a few days earlier. We brought him home yesterday and he has stayed in his litter tray since last night. He will allow me to stroke him but does not want to be handled and has hardly eaten the food we have put downfor him.

I understand that the new surroundings are hard to accept but i want to make sure ii am doing the right thing. I can hear him at the moment squealing which i presume is him calling for his brothers, mum etc. He is alo contantly purring which i always thought ment he was happy, however it does not seem to be the case at this moment in time.

Has anyone got any sound advice.

Many Thanks

oh my I can see why that would be upsetting you

how old it the little fella - most breeders wont let them go until they are of an certain age.

Purring can also be a sign of stress, which of course he will be feeling about his change of surroundings - where are you keeping him at the moment, he needs to feel secure - try to make a warm bed for him somewhere, maybe in a box, you could give him an old toy to cuddle up too, as he will be missing his litter mates.

Well I hope he settles soon - keep us posted

ps I know you said he doesnt like to be handled but I think if you can cuddle him and reassure him with soft words, it will also help - also that will help him get used to your scent.

How old is this kitten? It could also be the fact the breeder did NOT socialize the kittens very well. If younger then 10-12 weeks old, the breeder let them go far too soon. They need mom/siblings till then to become a healthy, social kitten.

You might consider adopting an older kitten as a friend to help him adjust quicker.

It sounds like he is scared and lonely. He is hiding in the covered litter tray.

Do you have a pet carrier that you can fix up with a warm blanket and perhaps a stuffed animal. You can place him in that and then I would confine him to one room with the litter box, food, water and toys.

Keep it quiet and try to talk to him. He will come around but it may take several days.

It is very scarey to be taken away from your mom and littermates and then moved to a new enviroment.

Post pictures when you can. It really seems to be the breeder didn't socialize this kitten very well. Charlie was 4 months old when we brought him home - was not afraid of ANYthing or anyone

Firefox was like that the 1st week, too - she's a former feral i rescued. i put a heating pad under her donut bed, plus a couple of stuffed kittens to simulate littermates. seemed to help. if you don't have stuffed animals, try filling a sock [dirty would be good - has your scent!] with raw rice & microwaving it until it's warm. it'll be about the right size, shape & warmth of a littermate.
