I know a lot of people thought John (Amberthebobcat) was a female
You know it took me ages (I mean MONTHS) to figure out Epona and Nate were different people who lived together...
I'd seen their kitty sigs, and they were the same cat but different sigs, and I just assumed they switched regularly - I often don't look at the names, just the sigs. Then Nate started posting more and I got very confused then one day it clicked

It does when you keep calling someone like "theimp98" a female all the time

I haven't!! And to tell you the truth, once people start having more "personal" conversations with each other, using their real names, and teasing, I generally don't bother reading any more. It's often a private joke I don't get so stop reading.

While I agree that we all ought to be careful how much information we give out, I do find it hard to keep up with people here -- even people I really, really like and have exchanged PMs with!

I wish everyone's sig included the name he or she wants to be called by (even if it's just the username, or an alias), so I could do a better job of associating the right person with my memory of a conversation or situation.

And here's another suggestion: I wish everyone would put a location in the location line!
Some of the entries there are very clever and cute... but when you have an international community like this, and conversations cover things like weather, local events, legal issues, support services, available products, etc., it's frustrating not to be able to tell whether you're talking to someone in Massachusetts or Madagascar!

It can be done safely, too -- just "Eastern Tennessee" or "Near Helsinki" would be enough to give people a context.

I'm not too worried about putting Columbus on mine, honestly there's a million people here (really) and good luck figuring it out. Now, the three of you who are my friends on facebook could show up at my front door with a little bit of stalking but I'm not worried or I wouldn't have friended you!

I just realized I have the ohio thing in my location. Does anyone get that, or do you just think i am loco?

I never ever assume anything based on someone's name. Julie, yes, it's safe to assume I'm a girl. But both my parents have names that are more typically the opposite sex, and pretty much every time a stranger called they got it wrong. If they wanted my mom they'd ask for Mr ___ or if they wanted my dad they'd ask for Mrs ___. My dad would be the one getting tampon samples in the mail.

I too would like to see a location on the location line. It would not have to be exact (as I have done.)

I have been here a few months now and still don't know who is who. I do check profiles at times mostly to see just what age person I am talking to and respond accordingly. I at one time even wrote down names and ages and locations of people but that turned out to be too much work so now I just check the profile when I need to.

it'd be nice if the age & gender were in the little 'mini bio' on the right, like the location is. that is, assuming a person had those items in their 'to be shared' info. just would make things a bit handier, so to speak.

Ha! You're right. Maybe an age adjective would be better. Like youngish, or decrepit, or middlin'...

Or if you want to know someone's age, you could just mention, like, Fifty Cent. If they don't ask, "Fifty cents for what?" you know they're under 25.

So that's why I keep getting carded when I buy a lottery ticket.

j/k. I'm 30, but everyone seems to think I'm a lot younger.

Nor men. But until I hear different, at 67, I am going to assume I am the oldest guy here. Any takers?

Entering even a general location can be problematic, though. I used to have "Germany" given as my location, which led to some people accusing me of being anti-American whenever I criticized Bush, and at least one person here sending me PMs calling me a Nazi. The trouble is, I'm an American, born and raised there, and I spend about a month a year in the U.S.. I also vote in U.S. elections, and closely follow the news.

Another U.S. citizen who lives abroad has also been accused of being anti-American.

So you see, there can be real reasons for indicating "silly" locations.
